Job Description & How to Apply Below

We are currently partnered with a highly respected New England construction firm in their search for a Senior Plant Mechanical Estimator to support the continued growth of their District Energy and Central Utility Plant business.

This is an opportunity to join a 100+ year-old contractor with a strong reputation across higher education, healthcare, public/institutional, infrastructure, energy, and technically complex construction
.

Their District Energy group has become one of the company’s largest areas of focus and currently performs approximately $300M in annual work
, with the majority of that volume concentrated throughout Greater Boston and New England. The team also has an established backlog and is continuing to expand throughout New York and the Mid-Atlantic.

The company has an established preconstruction and estimating team with specialists across mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, and other technical disciplines. This hire is intended to strengthen the front end of that group and add additional technical depth around major central plant and campus utility projects.

What You'll Be Working On

  • Central Utility and Central Energy Plants
  • District Heating and Cooling
  • Campus Utility Infrastructure
  • Chilled Water and Condenser Water Systems
  • Steam and Heating Hot Water Systems
  • Boilers, Chillers, Cooling Towers, Pumps and Heat Exchangers
  • Large-Bore Mechanical Piping
  • Plant Expansions and Modernization
  • CHP / Cogeneration
  • Alternative-Energy and Thermal Infrastructure

Projects are often brought to the team very early in the planning process, before a complete design exists.

A client may come to the team with a need for additional cooling, steam, or plant capacity, and this person will help determine what equipment and supporting systems are required, how the plant should be configured, what constructability or phasing challenges need to be considered, and what the overall project is likely to cost.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing conceptual and ROM budgets for central plant and district energy projects
  • Reviewing early design information, narratives, P&IDs, drawings, and equipment schedules
  • Determining major equipment, piping, valves, pumps, controls, and supporting infrastructure
  • Working directly with manufacturers, vendors, and subcontractors to develop pricing
  • Identifying scope gaps, risk, constructability issues, and phasing challenges
  • Supporting value engineering and system alternative analysis
  • Developing and validating project budgets
  • Explaining and defending budget assumptions to clients and internal leadership
  • Supporting projects from early concept through preconstruction and GMP development
  • Collaborating with engineering and operations teams throughout project development

Ideal Background

  • 15+ years of relevant mechanical, energy, estimating, preconstruction, or engineering experience
  • Strong experience with central utility plants, district energy, campus utilities, or large mechanical infrastructure
  • Strong understanding of chilled water, steam, heating hot water, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, heat exchangers, and large-bore piping
  • Experience working with vendors and subcontractors on equipment and installation pricing
  • Ability to work from limited or incomplete design information
  • Background in mechanical estimating, preconstruction, ESCO project development, mechanical engineering, district energy, or central plant operations/engineering
  • PE or engineering degree is a plus, but not required
  • Annual Bonus Potential
  • 401(k) with Company Contribution
  • Paid Vacation, Sick Time and Holidays
  • Employer-Paid Life and Disability Insurance
  • Planned Travel for Client Meetings, Project Walks and Major Pursuits
  • Long-Term Growth Opportunity within a rapidly expanding District Energy business
