Site:
The General Hospital Corporation. Shift: Monday‑Thursday, 10 am‑6:30 pm;
Friday, 9 am‑5:30 pm. Starting pay: $19.85/hr sign‑on bonus: $3,000.

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Clinical Support Services, the individual collects specimens for laboratory analysis—including blood, urine, and nasal swabs. The role explains safety protocols and procedures to patients, is customer‑focused, and performs certain clerical functions.

Responsibilities
  • Collect blood using good judgment, reasonable and prudent care, in accordance with policies and procedures; ensure a complete match between requisitions, labels, and patient identification cards.
  • Check two patient identifiers.
  • Use hand hygiene procedures according to unit guidelines.
  • Select appropriate specimen collection equipment.
  • Select an appropriate site for blood collection.
  • Tie tourniquet and prepare site for venipuncture.
  • Collect specimens according to the order of draw.
  • Ensure adequate mixing of the specimen in the tube by inversion or a mechanical device.
  • Label in the presence of patients.
  • Package and transport specimens.
  • Monitor patient and ensure bleeding has stopped; ensure patient is stable.
  • Review a standard checklist before collection, including potential adverse reactions such as a history of fainting and latex allergy.
  • Be customer focused and put the needs of patients first.
  • Maintain patient privacy and follow all HIPAA guidelines.
  • With training, or if qualified by competency review, provide EKG, clerical and specimen transport functions.
  • With training, or if qualified by competency review, provide pediatric and ancillary services to phlebotomy operations serviced by Laboratory Support Services.
  • Provide reception and associated clerical functions at the Specimen Collection center front desk, including fax receipt and send, filing of orders, answering telephones, and placing requisitions in the queue according to policies and procedures.
  • Maintain adequate supply inventory and complete monthly inventory checks as assigned.
  • Satisfy annual required continuing education for phlebotomists and mandatory life safety, HIPAA, and other required training.
  • Work in collaboration with and practice good teamwork and communication skills with co‑workers.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Pediatric Phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Graduate of a training program that includes phlebotomy skills, and demonstrate acceptable competency in phlebotomy preferred.
  • Inpatient Phlebotomy experience preferred.
