Job Summary
Performs blood-drawing procedures to obtain specimens from patients aged 13 years to over 65, including infants and young children up to one year. Handles patient populations that are immunosuppressed, have late-stage cancer, or are morbidly obese. Provides phlebotomy training, product evaluation, and new application implementation upon request.
Key Responsibilities- Demonstrate venipuncture and heelstick procedures with competence.
- Verify patient identity, confirm order accuracy and label properly.
- Collect specimens following correct order of draw and infection control guidelines.
- Set up and transport specimens according to protocols.
- Maintain phlebotomy sheets, logbooks, and other documentation.
- Train new employees, students, and others as needed.
- Assist with new product evaluations and implementation of new hardware and software.
- Follow all policies related to attendance, hand hygiene, and safety.
- Work weekends and holidays as required.
- Perform additional duties such as heel sticks, glucose tolerance testing, and EKG as directed.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Phlebotomy certification preferred.
- Two years’ experience as a BWH phlebotomist with effective performance evaluation.
- Proper aseptic techniques and blood draw equipment selection.
- Effective communication with patients and family to reduce anxiety.
- Physical stamina to stand and walk for long periods and transport supplies.
- Basic computer skills for email and hospital applications.
- Customer service and teamwork skills.
- Fast-paced environment.
- Exposure to needle sticks and infectious patients.
- Weekend and holiday rotation.
