The Bandopadhayay and Beroukhim Labs ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). and ) at DFCI are seeking a joint Lab Manager to help find better treatments for children and adults with brain tumors. We apply cutting-edge genomic technologies to identify drivers of childhood and adult cancers, identify strategies to target these and to determine mechanisms of resistance to current and novel treatments. The aim is to perform translational research to develop new therapies to improve outcomes of children diagnosed with these tumors.
The work will be highly translational and span efforts from profiling the cancer genomes of pediatric brain tumors to determining new therapeutic targets, applying molecular oncology and functional genomic methodologies to determine oncogenic mechanisms and identify new dependencies, and to characterize mechanisms of resistance.
- Coordinate overall lab management for teams, overseeing lab ordering, managing day-to-day tasks, onboarding and training new staff.
- Help drive forward scientific projects in collaboration with other scientists in the team, including single-cell/spatial technologies and high-throughput genetic perturbation approaches.
- Manage team of RDSs to ensure correct sample inventories at large – blood and tissue derived.
- Manage all receiving, storage and retrieval requests, arranging sample transport, audits inventory of all samples, data entry in database systems, and placement of samples in correct temperature storage.
- Work with frequent users to maximize efficiency and batch requests when feasible.
- Responsible for receiving and tracking lab samples, managing freezer inventory, ordering necessary supplies, submitting billing charges, and assisting with ad hoc projects and reports.
- Hire and train RDS staff for proficient sample management in all chains of custody.
- Responsible for managing, directing, and leading the RDS team.
- Collaborate with the Thub team for seamless specimen collections, inventories and transfers.
- Manage billing invoices to external and internal customers.
- Manage all equipment maintenance and schedules repairs as needed.
- Manage and update biospecimen related SOPs.
- Assist PI in monitoring, enabling and facilitate collaborations with other programs.
- Active intellectual involvement in research projects is encouraged.
- Responsible for managing efficient and effective administration of protocols and materials/stocks.
- Train and manage RDSs and guide recruitment of technical staff.
- Responsible for annual reviews of technical staff performance.
- Assist PI with counseling, teaching, training, mentoring, orientation, in-service and continuing education for laboratory staff and trainees.
- Ensure all lab staff are compliant with mandatory trainings required by DFCI, NIH and sponsor(s).
- Oversee 5-8 lab members.
- Exceptional people management and organization skills, with demonstrated ability to multi-task to enable many concurrent projects in a complex, fast paced environment.
- Excellent quantitative, analytic, and problem-solving skills to evaluate all aspects of a problem opportunity and make or facilitate appropriate and timely decisions.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability and willingness to work closely with other colleagues as a team; experience and comfort in working with individuals with diverse backgrounds and differing viewpoints; openness to new ideas.
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Bachelor’s degree with at least 3 years postgraduate experience in molecular biology, cellular biology, cancer biology, or a related discipline.
- Enthusiastic, team player, innovative and analytical thinker, and self-motivated individual.
- Experience with cell culture and other models of human cancers, molecular oncology techniques and/or computational biology.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent mentorship skills.
- Candidate should have an outstanding academic and professional track record.
Applicants are required to provide three referees at the time of application. A minimum commitment of three years is strongly preferred.
