The Behavioral Health Transport Program, staffed with an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and a Behavioral Health Counselor (BHC), using non‑ambulance vehicles, offers an alternative model to safely and appropriately facilitate transport for behavioral health patients receiving care at Boston Children’s Hospital and Franciscan Children’s to other behavioral health facilities.
Key Responsibilities- Provides assistance in the transport and management of behavioral health patients between facilities, monitoring patients for physical and psychological safety.
- Operates vehicle in accordance with Massachusetts driving laws.
- Able to recognize signs of escalating behavior, agitation or psychiatric distress.
- Collaborates with mental health professionals to follow individualized care plans when available and utilizes de‑escalating techniques when appropriate.
- Demonstrates knowledge of operation of transport vehicle and equipment and ensures proper functioning before transport.
- Demonstrates continued professional growth through continuing education while maintaining competency as an EMT through required training and/or education. Also participates in Quality Assurance Program in conjunction with the Medical Director, Program Manager, and other medical control physicians.
- 18 hrs; days with rotating weekends.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 3 years of previous EMT experience required.
- Experience in an emergency (911) system preferred.
- Work requires analytical skills to gather and interpret data in routine situations.
- Work requires frequently sitting, standing, walking for long periods; bending, crouching, kneeling; hand and fine‑motor skills; lifting up to 50 lbs; working in small, confined spaces and a mobile environment.
- Massachusetts Certified Emergency Medical Technician.
- Massachusetts driver’s license or equivalent.
- Current Basic Life Support for the Health Care Provider.
The posted pay range reflects Boston Children’s reasonable and good‑faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting. Base pay depends on skills, experience, education, certifications, and other factors.
