Job Summary

Under the direction of the Chief Epilepsy Monitoring Technologist and the Medical Director of the Epilepsy Service, performs Phase I and Phase II monitoring procedures on all ages of patients from infants to geriatrics. The Epilepsy Specialist II is required to have passed examination by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalography (R.EEGT). The Epilepsy Specialist II /Neurophysiology Technologist ll performs all core functions of the Neurophysiology Technologist position specific to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.

Performs monitoring of patients during special procedures such as sodium amytal injection (Wada testing), PET, Ictal SPECT and Cortical Stimulation. Reviews video/EEG data and correlates the clinical and electrographic activity of the patient's seizures. Extracts other pertinent information (push button events, background activity etc.) about the patient's monitoring session and archives this data for future review. Assists the Chief Epilepsy Monitoring Technologist in the maintenance of equipment, patient spreadsheets, databases, special projects and other duties as necessary and appropriate.

Principal

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs all core functions of the Neurophysiology Technologist position.
  • Prepares and monitors patients for Phase I (scalp), and Phase II (intracranial placed electrodes or grids) evaluations.
  • Recognizes clinically significant events and electroencephalographic patterns.
  • Ensures patient safety in the setting of a patient experiencing a clinical seizure. Correlates EEG waveform with the clinical manifestations of the seizure.
  • Analyzing and communicating electrographic changes during Sodium Amytal Injection (Wada testing).
  • Sets up equipment and records intracranial electrodes as patients are being implanted in the operating room.
  • Works quickly and efficiently in the operating room as alterations in original operative plan spontaneously change.
  • The specialist will connect, record and analyze data from minimally invasive Foramen Ovale electrodes.
  • Collaborates with our Intraoperative colleagues performing language and motor mapping studies on our implanted patients. As stimulation is applied, specialist will actively document settings and responses by patient.
  • Specialist must be able to work independently and be proficient in accessing studies remotely.
  • Obtains and maintains MRI certification to record patients in MRI compatible OR suites.
  • Archives clinical and electrographic data for future review.
  • Encrypts patient files onto removable hard drive.
  • Notifies physicians of patients experiencing prolonged clinical seizures.
  • Knows head dressing and wrapping techniques to secure invasive electrodes.
  • Assists in the training of Neurophysiology Technologists.
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot various pieces of equipment on site and remotely.
  • Identify network or server related issues requiring additional support.
  • Serves as a resource and role model for Neurophysiology Technologist: patiently and properly trains others at Neurophysiologist Technologist levels as required or assigned. Mentors junior staff.
  • May assume daily operational responsibilities during Chief Technologist absence.
  • Maintains continuing education requirements of ABRET for R.EEGT.
Skills & Competencies Required
  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to competently use Natus based equipment.
  • Computer literacy including MS applications and Excel.
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot technical problems independently.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of infection control aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Ability to train others effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and be proficient in accessing studies remotely.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications.
Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma or Equivalent required or Associate's Degree Related Field of Study preferred.

Licenses and Credentials

Registered Electroencephalographic Technologist [R. EEG T.] - ABRET Neurodiagnostic Credentialing & Accreditation preferred.

Experience

Experience as a Neurodiagnostic Technologist I 1-2 years required.
