Lead Medical Technologist – Blood Bank

We seek an experienced Lead Medical Technologist to provide technical, quality, and operational leadership within a Blood Bank Laboratory at a full-service acute care hospital in the Greater Boston area
. This role is ideal for a seasoned Clinical Laboratory Technologist who enjoys hands‑on bench work while also serving as a technical lead, mentor, and quality champion.
Reporting to the Laboratory Services Supervisor, the Lead Medical Technologist plays a critical role in ensuring regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, staff competency, and high-quality transfusion services.
Position OverviewThe Lead Medical Technologist provides day-to-day technical oversight for the Blood Bank, performing routine and specialty testing while coordinating quality control, staff training, inventory management, and regulatory readiness. This role serves as a key liaison between laboratory staff, leadership, nursing education, and clinical partners.
Technical & Clinical Leadership- Perform routine and specialized Blood Bank testing in accordance with established protocols.
- Serve as a technical and quality resource for Blood Bank staff.
- Review daily and periodic quality control results and ensure corrective actions when needed.
- Monitor transfusion activity for regulatory compliance, including oversight of contracted transfusion sites as required.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with applicable standards and regulations (AABB, CAP, Joint Commission, CLIA, OSHA, FDA).
- Coordinate proficiency testing and CAP surveys; ensure accurate participation and reporting.
- Assist with inspections, audits, and regulatory reporting as needed.
- Support validation activities for new equipment, procedures, and system upgrades (including LIS/Meditech).
- Coordinate daily workload, staffing support, and blood product inventory.
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels while minimizing blood product wastage.
- Oversee instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and documentation.
- Monitor turnaround times and specimen review logs for accuracy and performance.
- Lead onboarding and training of new Blood Bank staff.
- Ensure annual competency assessments and compliance with mandatory education.
- Partner with Nursing Education to support transfusion-related training and materials.
- Conduct emergency preparedness drills (e.g., disaster response, massive transfusion protocols).
- Collect, analyze, and track quality and performance data.
- Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives and hospital-wide performance improvement efforts.
- Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and enhance service delivery.
Education
- Associate’s degree in Medical Technology or a related science
(Equivalent combinations of education and experience considered)
- Minimum 3 years of full-time experience as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist
- Blood Bank or transfusion service experience strongly preferred
- ASCP certification or equivalent preferred
- Strong knowledge of Blood Bank procedures and transfusion practices
- Familiarity with laboratory quality systems and regulatory standards
- Ability to communicate laboratory data clearly and accurately
- Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong problem‑solving skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively across clinical and operational teams
- Full‑time, on‑site laboratory position

- Exposure to biohazards typical of clinical laboratory operations
