Position Summary
Under the direction of the Transport Supervisor or the Director of Transport Services, this position performs a variety of duties including transporting patients, medical equipment, and specimens to and from areas within the hospital as assigned.
Schedule Full Time, 3pm-11:30pm Every Other Weekend.
Responsibilities- Transport patients, specimens, equipment, and related items and supplies safely and comfortably to and from areas within the hospital in a timely manner.
- Greet patients, families, visitors, and staff in a friendly, courteous, positive customer‑service manner and identify yourself as a transporter.
- Hand off patients to a caregiver while verifying patient identification (first and last name, medical record number, and destination) prior to transport.
- Receive and put away supplies in SMC and CPD, match packing slips with purchase order numbers, file paperwork, and complete Return Goods Authorization forms.
- Deliver patient equipment to designated areas, retrieve and clean equipment, label clean items "Equipment is Clean", and deliver broken equipment to the appropriate repair location.
- Package and ship repairs to repair companies; maintain a repair log database.
- Communicate with vendors to coordinate repairs and equipment loaners, and pick up and return loaned or borrowed equipment from neighboring hospitals.
- Carry pager, radio, and headset while on duty and respond to pages or radio calls in a timely manner.
- Maintain a log of all patient transports, documenting names, times, destinations, and items transported; submit the log to the supervisor, close out trips, and record lunch and break times.
- Record an inventory count of equipment daily and utilize filing systems for procurement archiving.
- Inspect the transport vehicle for safety before use, checking cleanliness, oxygen levels, brakes, handrails, mattress, etc., and clean as needed.
- Perform all duties with a customer‑service focus and represent the hospital and nursing department in a professional, courteous manner to all hospital employees, vendors, patients, and visitors.
- Treat patients in a manner that preserves and protects autonomy, dignity, confidentiality, and patient rights; respond to all service requests via radio, telephone, or personal contact; and, when unable to assist, follow through by contacting the dispatcher or supervisor.
- Direct unanswerable or unfulfilled requests to the appropriate individual and refer to the supervisor or manager as necessary.
- Maintain cleanliness and neatness of work and lounge areas.
- Assist in hospital emergency disaster plans, identify emergencies, initiate appropriate response actions within the scope of the role, and be familiar with local disaster plans.
- Complete department charge slips and record all transactions in the computerized information system, filing documents as required.
- Request assistance from nursing or aide staff when transferring or moving patients from wheelchair to stretcher or bed.
- Transport patients to the morgue and to and from the recovery room.
- Perform dispatcher functions as required.
- Use the hospital's values as the basis for decision‑making to support the division's mission.
- Follow established hospital infection control and safety procedures; cleanse stretchers or wheelchairs after transporting patients with "precaution" status.
- Remain knowledgeable of and adhere to department policies and procedures; comply with practice standards, protocols, guidelines, and regulations (DEG, Joint Commission, Fire Codes, OSHA, etc.).
- Complete annual mandatory educational requirements such as safety regulation and infection control reviews, and departmental or unit‑specific competencies.
- Maintain a presentable appearance per dress code; wear assigned uniform, pager, and visible while on duty.
- Demonstrate reliability by following established work rules and policies, including hours, attendance, punctuality, and work assignments.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Preferred but not required CPR certification.
- 6-12 months of customer service or hospital experience preferred.
- Ability to lift and move heavy items, push, pull, and stand for extended periods.
- Strong interpersonal skills to communicate clearly with nursing staff, patients, families/visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff.
- Proficient reading, writing, and speaking in English.
- Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and efficiently complete assigned tasks.
