The Summer Assistant (SA) position is an integral part of the staffing and services provided to residents and summer conference guests by the Office of Housing and Residential Life. The primary goal of the Summer Assistant is to ensure complete customer satisfaction from the beginning to end of all summer stays. The Summer Assistant will be involved in all phases of the conference operation including, but not limited to, conference preparation, check-in, and check-out, assembling key packets, preparing client materials, light cleaning in rooms, some maintenance tasks (maintenance tasks including but not limited to bed raising/lowering), preparing linen packets and handling (washing/drying/folding) linen.
EssentialDuties
- B e available to interact with residents/guests in the residence halls.
- Perform administrative tasks such as filing, copying, answering phones, making calls and data entry.
- Work closely with the Conference staff to ensure quality service for summer school students and conference guests.
- Assist with the check-in/out process for summer residents/guests including preparing keys/welcome letters prior to arrival and greeting residents/guests upon arrival.
- Assist in turnover of rooms which includes linen placement/removal.
- Serve as a liaison between guests and the custodial and maintenance staff about completing custodial and maintenance requests.
- Post/remove notices and information as needed.
- Take part in an "on-call" duty system (5:00 p.m.
- 8:30 a.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends and weekday holidays) on a rotating basis. - Report all incidents to the appropriate on-call professional staff member.
- Complete Room Inspection and Room Inventory as assigned.
- Process all paperwork in a timely, neat, and efficient manner.
- Complete mandatory COCM Online training.
- Attend any required staff meetings, including pre-summer scheduling meeting.
- Check UMass Boston e-mail at least once per day during summer employment.
- Uphold and abide by the policies and procedures in the UMass Boston Resident Handbook and Student Code of Conduct.
- On occasions may assist with low skilled maintenance/cleaning tasks as needed/assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Must be a University of Massachusetts Boston undergraduate student at time of application
- Good academic and disciplinary standing throughout the employment term.

- Dependability and willingness to work a flexible schedule.
- Must maintain high personal and ethical standards. Behave with the professionalism appropriate to the position.
12 hours per week with overnight and rotating weekend duty. The staff member on-call must always remain within 15 minutes of campus, must respond to all calls, must sleep on campus, and must conduct daily and/or nightly rounds in all buildings.

Single occupancy room (no roommate) within the residence halls in exchange for 12 hrs/wk at $15.00 per hour + overnight and rotating weekend duty.
Contract will begin May 24, 2026, and end August 23, 2026. The SA will be hired as summer staff by COCM and housing in the residence halls will be provided in exchange for 12 hrs/week including overnight and rotating weekend duty. Utilities and WiFi are also included.
