Job OverviewUnder general supervision, this position provides accurate interpretation for patients/families who have Limited English Proficiency (LEP). The interpreter facilitates communication between healthcare providers and patients, translating spoken language from English to the target language and back, and may translate written documents as well.
Job Profile SummarySupports patients and families by providing accurate, compassionate language access in a healthcare setting. This professional individual‑contributor role may direct the work of other lower level professionals or manage processes and programs, overseeing the design, implementation, or delivery of policies and procedures related to patient care.
Minimum Qualifications- High School diploma or equivalent
- Medical Interpreter Certification from an accredited program
- One (1) year of relevant interpreting experience
- Bilingual
- National Certification for Medical Interpreters
- Three (3) years of relevant experience
- Interpret spoken language from English into the target language and vice‑versa for patients, physicians, and staff.
- Interpret cultural context to prevent misunderstandings.
- Participate in family meetings with social workers to assist in forms, financial aid, or patient transfer.
- Contact non‑English speaking patients to obtain consent, notify appointments, and explain procedures.
- Accompany patients to operating rooms or other departments when required.
- Translate correspondence, brochures, and special diagnostic procedures.
- Be available for on‑call requests for emergencies at night and weekends.
- Maintain collaborative relationships to support team goals.
- Adhere to policies, procedures, and compliance requirements.
- Participate in mandatory in‑services.
- Prolonged standing/walking; regular lifting up to 100 pounds.
- Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing stairs.
- Exposure to hazardous chemicals, radiation, and transmissible infections.
- Regular contact with patients in varied circumstances.
- Requires visual acuity for close and distance vision.
- Read/write and communicate fluently in both languages.
- Provide clear, effective interpretation in medical settings.
- Advanced knowledge of interpreting techniques, medical terminology, basic anatomy, and diagnostic procedures.
- Maintain courtesy and tact with sensitive information.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and organization.
- Reliable and capable of functioning in busy situations.
Base pay ranges for the role: $49,951.00 – $69,932.00. Additional benefits include a comprehensive Total Rewards package supporting health, financial security, and career growth.
