Medical Interpreter – Chinese (Cantonese and Other Dialects)

Tufts Medical Center is seeking professional Medical Interpreters to support Chinese‑speaking patients and families with accurate, compassionate language services in a healthcare setting.

Job Overview

Under general supervision, this position provides accurate interpretation for patients/families who have Limited English Proficiency (LEP). The interpreter facilitates spoken language and cultural communication between English‑speaking providers and non‑English‑speaking patients, and may translate written documents as needed. The role also includes acting as a cultural broker to identify and resolve misunderstandings arising from cultural differences.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Medical Interpreter Certification from an accredited college or university
  • One (1) year of relevant interpreting experience
  • Bilingual in English and Chinese (Cantonese and other dialects)
Preferred Qualifications
  • National Certification for Medical Interpreters
  • Three (3) years of relevant experience
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Interpret spoken language from English into Chinese and back for patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Combine language and cultural interpretation skills.
  • Participate in family meetings with social workers to assist in completing forms and obtaining financial aid.
  • Contact non‑English‑speaking patients to obtain consent, notify of appointments, and explain procedures, diagnoses, and medical history.
  • Accompany patients to operating rooms or other departments when required; participate in patient/client care conferences.
  • Translate correspondence, brochures, documents, and special diagnostic procedures from English into Chinese.
  • May be required to take on‑call requests for emergencies at night and on weekends.
  • Maintain collaborative, team relationships to contribute to group goals and foster a positive work environment.
  • Adhere to applicable policies and procedures for patient/client care and personnel qualifications.
  • Report corporate compliance concerns to the CEO or Chief Compliance Officer.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies (DPH, ERISA, etc.) and Home Health Foundation policies.
  • Practice confidentiality principles under HIPAA/HITECH guidelines.
  • Participate in all mandatory in‑services.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged standing/walking.
  • Regularly lift and/or move 25 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
  • Requires reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, and climbing stairs.
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals, sick patients, bodily substances, noise, and potential radiation, lasers, electric shock.
  • Regular exposure to risk of blood‑borne diseases and other transmissible infections.
  • Regular contact with patients in diverse circumstances.
  • Requires both close and distance vision with ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment noise level typically moderate.
Skills & Abilities
  • Read/write and communicate fluently in both languages.
  • Provide effective and clear interpretation and communication.
  • Advanced knowledge of interpreting techniques, medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures and treatments in both English and Chinese.
  • High degree of courtesy and tact in regular contacts involving sensitive information.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Function well in very busy situations.
  • Responsible and reliable.
  • Good organizational skills.
Pay Range

Base pay ranges reflect the minimum qualifications for the role. Individual offers are determined using a comprehensive approach that considers relevant experience, certifications, education, skills, and internal equity.
