The Medical Interpreter I is responsible for assessing the needs of patients and providing assistance by interpreting consent forms, diagnoses, discharge plans, and other patient‑related information.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Answer requests for interpretation promptly and effectively, prioritizing emergency and urgent requests.
  • Arrive on time for appointments and provide services from the point of entry through discharge.
  • Interpret and transmit medical information accurately and understandably from providers to patients and from patients to providers, including consent forms, diagnoses, procedures, and discharge plans.
  • Assist patients and clinical providers throughout the hospital system in a professional and courteous manner, referring to resources when necessary.
  • Seek evaluation, certification, and additional training in interpreting, health‑care practices, beliefs, and cultural differences.
  • Maintain a collaborative work environment and assist Interpreter Services staff with office tasks as needed.
  • Accept and process assignments for your language, following office protocol, logging information, and informing the Interpreter Services department of any changes promptly.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of services rendered and documentation of patient‑related information.
  • Resolve most issues that arise in daily responsibilities, answering questions and making appropriate referrals; more complex issues are handled by the Supervisor of Interpreter Services.
  • Interpret medical information between providers and patients/families in three modalities: in‑person/on‑campus, video, or telephonic interpretation.
  • Recognize and respect diversity for all patients and the Dana‑Farber workforce.
  • Act as a cultural broker when communication is compromised by culture‑bound messages.
  • Follow the recognized Medical Interpreter Codes of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
  • Perform other tasks, duties, and responsibilities as needed.
  • Adhere to department procedures for initial interpreter screening and ongoing competencies, completing and passing required assessments.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong concentration, detail orientation, and culturally sensitive care, transmitting information accurately and completely.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle difficult and demanding situations.
  • Excellent organizational skills to evaluate needs, set priorities, solve problems, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to follow directions with minimal supervision.
Minimum Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree with a concentration in a human relations field (e.g., Sociology, Psychology) preferred.
  • 1 year of experience as a medical interpreter required.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy, physiology, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.
  • Fluent in English and the target language, both verbal and written.
  • Certificate of completion of a medical interpreter training program required; national certification preferred.
License/Certification/Registration Required
  • Certificate of completion of a medical interpreter training program.

Pay Transparency Statement:
The hiring range is based on market pay structures, with individual salaries determined by business needs, market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications. For union positions, the pay range is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). $56,000.00 – $64,200.00.
