Division

of Trauma, Emergency Surgery and Surgical Critical Care

The Division seeks an APP who is both an expert clinician and prepared at the Masters Level. In conjunction with the Surgical Attending (Trauma/Emergency Surgery), the APP assumes responsibility and accountability for the management of a designated adult trauma and emergency surgery patient population across all settings in which the patient receives care.

This is a full‑time 40‑hour position; 3–13 hour shifts, weekend and holiday rotation.

The APP functions as a member of the trauma/emergency surgery team with responsibilities including assessment, diagnosis, management, and coordination of care for patients on the trauma/emergency surgery service from the time of entry to the system throughout the continuum of care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct patient care: inpatient and outpatient management, history & physical examination, including trauma tertiary survey.
  • Medical diagnoses with prescription of medical & nursing therapies.
  • Incident‑oriented progress notes, laboratory test ordering and interpretation, radiographic ordering and interpretation with trauma team or radiology consultation.
  • Coordination of system support for patient needs throughout the clinical course.
  • Resuscitation Phase, Critical Care Phase, Intermediate Care Phase.
  • In conjunction with the team, initiate medical and/or nursing specialty consults.
  • Initiate discharge planning process—incorporating PM&R, Social Service, and Case Manager.
  • Liaison with Social Service and specialty services (OT, PT, Speech, RT, Nutrition) to ensure comprehensive clinical focus.
  • Indirect patient care: participation in multidisciplinary rounds—trauma/emergency surgery service.
  • Peer review conference, performance improvement activities.
  • Support and participate in research activities, outreach and prevention program functions.
  • Procedures: wound management—dressings, irrigation/cleansing & debridement, suture/staple removal, cervical collar placement & removal, vascular access, NG/OG tube insertion, indwelling bladder catheterization, arterial line placement.
  • Administration: staff education & consultation.
  • Critical pathway management, policy/procedure development.
  • Rotation through the outpatient surgical clinic to complete post‑operative and post‑trauma follow‑up, wound care evaluation, and hernia pre‑operative evaluation.
Skills and Experience
  • Trauma/acute care experience is strongly preferred.
  • Critical care experience is strongly preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, or Registration
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in Massachusetts required; certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner preferred.
  • Current Physician Assistant License in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Essential Functions
  • Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting.
  • Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops appropriate plans of care and follow‑up based on diagnostic and laboratory findings.
  • Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation—including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Performs bedside procedures as appropriate to the patient population.
  • Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
Qualifications

Education:

Master’s Degree in Nursing required. No experience in lieu of a degree will be accepted.
