Advanced

Practice Registered Nurse Fellowship in Palliative Care

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse fellowship in palliative care is part of the Harvard Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship program. It is an immersive, year-long, interprofessional training program that equips the fellow with specialized skills in advanced communication, complex symptom management and psychosocial support. The fellow trains alongside physicians, other nurse practitioners, pharmacy and social work fellows. The trainee gains skills in comprehensive palliative care assessment of patients with chronic life-limiting illness, focused physical examination and formulation of plans to address symptoms, psychosocial distress and promote goal-concordant care.

Clinical work is directly supervised by attending physicians, staff nurse practitioners and other members of the interprofessional palliative care team. The trainee also participates in academic work focused on resilience, leadership, research and education. By the end of the fellowship year, the fellow will have gained the skills to independently provide high level palliative care to patients with complex disease and will have the tools to engage in scholarship, research and other academic pursuits.
