Charlestown Navy Yard, MA

The Multiple Sclerosis Imaging Laboratory at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Athinoula

A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant in the field of Neuroimaging of Multiple Sclerosis. The central research program seeks to study brain pathology in subjects with Multiple Sclerosis, and to identify, in vivo, novel bio-imaging markers for monitoring Multiple Sclerosis disease course and response to treatments. To investigate this, our laboratory utilizes a multimodal imaging approach that combines MR-PET imaging with ultra-high-field MRI at 7 Tesla and on the novel Connectom scanner, together with an extensive clinical and cognitive assessment of patients.

We collaborate with an interdisciplinary group of clinicians, psychologists and neuroscientists to accomplish our research objectives.

The responsibilities of the Research Assistant position are varied, and involve all phases of human neuroimaging research. Specifically, the position involves the collection, management and analysis of multiple modes of imaging and requires the processing of functional MR and/or PET data, as well as structural MRI in conjunction with clinical and neuropsychological assessments. Main responsibilities will involve acquiring and analyzing data, and working with different multiple sclerosis patients’ populations.

Administrative coordination may also be required.

Candidates should have a B.S. or M.S. in biological sciences, engineering, computer science, or related fields. Experience in computer programming and image processing is beneficial. Exceptional computer and technical skills are required. The successful candidate will be experienced with productivity software (Open Office, Microsoft Office) and statistical programs (SPSS, SAS, R studio). Experience with multiple operating systems (UNIX/LINUX, OS, Windows) is a plus.

Familiarity with the following tools is highly desirable:
Free surfer, FSL, Matlab, SPM, shell scripting, Python and/or web development. Previous experience in neuroimaging or neuroanatomy is not required but would be beneficial.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated with excellent analytical and interpersonal skills. Strong written communication skills are required. Attention to detail, organizational capability, and the ability to handle multiple concurrent projects are essential. Excellent written and oral communication skills and comfort interacting with clinical populations is a must. The research assistant is expected to work independently in a fast paced environment and seek help when appropriate.

Interested applicants should send a cover letter describing research experience, interests and goals, as well as a curriculum vitae, including GPA, and contact names and details of at least three references to:
Caterina Mainero, M.D., P.h.D. by e-mail:caterina.harvard.edu .

A two-year time commitment is requested and salary will be based on qualifications and experience.

The Massachusetts General Hospital is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
