Job Description & How to Apply Below

Overview

The Italiano Laboratory at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scholar to investigate the biology of megakaryocytes, with emphasis on understanding the role of the cytoskeleton in platelet production as well as newly described functions of megakaryocytes in disease. Our laboratory is recognized for foundational discoveries defining the cell biological mechanisms that regulate platelet generation, and we are now uncovering new functions for megakaryocytes beyond platelet biogenesis.

These studies open a new chapter in megakaryocyte biology. For example, we are investigating how cytokine secretion from megakaryocytes contributes to myelofibrosis. The laboratory is in the Vascular Biology Program in the Longwood Medical Area adjacent to Harvard Medical School. This position is ideal for early-career scientists eager to develop a strong publication record and lead mechanistic and translational NIH-funded projects.

Research

Areas
  • Cytoskeletal and cell cycle regulation of pro platelet generation in megakaryocytes
  • Examining how megakaryocytes contribute to myelofibrosis
  • The science behind megakaryocyte heterogeneity
  • Using bioengineering to understand how megakaryocytes breach the endothelium to deposit platelets in the blood
  • Drug-induced thrombocytopenia
Key Responsibilities
  • Design and perform hematological and cellular experiments
  • Cutting-edge Microscopy
  • Flow cytometry analysis and sorting
  • Gene perturbation (transfection, knockdown/knockout)
  • Data analysis, presentation, manuscripts, and conference abstracts
  • Collaboration and mentoring of students
Why Boston Children’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School?
  • State-of-the-art imaging and flow cores
  • Strong hematology and platelet community
  • Unlimited resources and collaborations
  • High-level mentorship with emphasis on career development
