Under the general supervision of the University Police Lieutenant, the Sergeant patrols assigned areas of the University and adjacent property to provide a safe and secure environment. The Sergeant provides first‑line supervision of sworn and non‑sworn personnel on patrol duty, bike patrol, criminal investigations, community relations, crime prevention activities, and in‑service training activities. The Sergeant works independently, assumes complete charge in the absence of a superior officer, and performs duties in accordance with federal, state, and local laws and university policies.

• Support the UMass Boston Police Department mission and policies.
• Exercise police powers under M.G.L. Ch. 75 s. 32A in detecting and apprehending law violators.
• Investigate crimes, accidents, and complaints; identify offenders and participate in court proceedings.
• Patrol buildings and lands, observe for criminal activity, report incidents, and assist persons in danger.
• Assist with traffic control, enforce state motor‑vehicle laws, and university by‑laws.
• Maintain order at special events, conduct investigations, and submit accurate reports.
• Ensure evidence meets chain‑of‑custody standards and is properly audited.
• Instruct patrol personnel on departmental rules, regulations, and policies.
• Supervise all police and security personnel, review work for compliance, manage scheduling, and conduct performance evaluations.
• Review incident and accident reports for accuracy and compliance with laws and university regulations.
• Ensure prisoners in care are safely transported and processed.
• Assist command staff in establishing procedures and recommend improvements.
• Conduct accident and crime investigations and prepare detailed reports.
• Provide public assistance (lockout services, escorts, first aid, vehicle jump‑starts).
• Conduct inspections of personnel and equipment.
• Represent the department at community engagement events and meetings.
• Acquire specialized law‑enforcement skills and participate in community crime‑prevention programs.
• Assume command of police and security in the absence of superior officers during emergencies.
• Serve as Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act and related federal mandates.
• Maintain relationships with other law‑enforcement agencies and university departments.
• Respond promptly to assignments and emergencies, performing emergency first aid, CPR, Narcan, Epi‑pen, and AED therapy.
• Authorize overtime for assigned personnel within policy limits.
• Perform related work as required in specialized law‑enforcement tasks.

• Three (3) years of progressive law‑enforcement experience as a full‑time sworn police officer in good standing with UMass Boston Police or another agency.
• Completion of a Massachusetts Basic Police Training Program from an accredited academy or equivalent training for a Massachusetts police officer.
• Disciplinary action within the past 12 months or on a disciplinary probation renders the candidate ineligible.
