Position Overview
The Nevada Department of Veterans Services, Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City, Nevada is recruiting for a Licensed Practical Nurse
2. This position provides direct nursing care to residents on an assigned neighborhood. In addition, it administers medication and completes therapeutic procedures; provides specialized wound care; participates in MDS/Care Planning; and communicates with staff, residents, families, visitors, and the treatment team. It is a 24‑hour facility, so applicants may be required to work shifts. Experience in a skilled nursing facility and IV Certification is preferred.

- Provide direct nursing care to residents in an assigned neighborhood.
- Administer medication and complete therapeutic procedures.
- Provide specialized wound care.
- Participate in the MDS/Care Planning process.
- Communicate with neighborhood staff, residents, families and visitors, and the Nevada State Veterans Home treatment team.
- Assist in carrying out therapeutic procedures that provide emotional and physical comfort to patients and maintain safety, health and well‑being in the therapeutic environment.
- Physically restrain patients who are a threat to themselves or others and follow facility procedures regarding restraint techniques and duration.
- Administer medications as prescribed, ensuring correct route, counting controlled medications, monitoring for side effects or allergic reactions, and determining effectiveness.
- Document nurse progress notes in medical charts, review charts for changes in orders, prepare written reports and summaries, and assist with quality‑improvement activities such as auditing charts and compiling statistics.
- Provide emergency medical treatment such as CPR and first aid and complete accident and incident reports.
- Prepare and maintain medical treatment rooms, order and stock medical supplies, and ensure supplies are available.
- Provide prescribed education to patients and their families about health habits and answer questions regarding treatment.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, encourage independent performance, supervise or participate in therapeutic interventions, and serve as a positive role model.
- Delegate appropriate care duties to auxiliary personnel when suited to their licensure, certification, and competency.
- Schedule and transport patients to outside appointments, coordinate clinics, conduct screening tests, give immunization injections, and maintain associated records.
- Provide nursing care to inmates in a correctional setting, individuals with mental illness and/or developmental disability, or patients in a 24‑hour inpatient skilled nursing facility.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Nevada.
- Two years of experience as an LPN, including at least one year providing care to inmates in a correctional setting, individuals with mental illness and/or developmental disability, or patients in a skilled nursing facility.
- IV Certification (preferred).
- Working knowledge of theory and practice of practical nursing as applied to patients in mental health, developmental disabilities, correctional settings, or skilled nursing facilities.
- Knowledge of nursing principles and therapeutic interventions for chronic or acute conditions, including mental illness and developmental disability.
- Familiarity with commonly prescribed medications and their side effects.
- Understanding of quality‑assurance compliance activities and regulatory standards.
- Knowledge of routine laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures.
- Proficiency with standard medical equipment and documentation processes.
- Skill in personal care of patients, emergency medical treatment, and health education.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to hostile and combative behavior.
- Provide health education to patients and families.
- Deliver emergency medical treatment as required.
- Recognize and report changes in condition and medication side effects.
- Delegate appropriate assignments to subordinate staff.
