Scientist III

Job Summary

UCAR invites a Scientist III to develop and evaluate machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches that enhance remote sensing data assimilation and end‑to‑end Earth system prediction within community coupled data assimilation (DA) systems such as MPAS‑GOCART2G‑JEDI, MPAS‑DART, and WRF‑Chem/WRFDA.

Boulder, Colorado. Hybrid: minimum 3 business days per week in the Boulder office with flexible remote options.

• Design, implement, and prototype ML/AI methods for satellite data processing, quality control, bias/error modeling, and hybrid ML‑DA integration.
• Conduct cycling experiments, analyze results, and evaluate ML/AI enhancements on Earth system prediction.
• Publish findings, prepare reports, and support proposal development and scientific documentation.
• Mentor junior staff, collaborate across disciplines, and contribute to technical and outreach efforts.

• Ph.D. in atmospheric, climate, computer science, statistics, or related field (within last 5 years or expected 6 months).
• Strong foundation in numerical modeling, data assimilation theory, and data processing workflows.
• Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, Shell) and experience on HPC supercomputers.
• Excellent written and oral communication, time management, and organizational skills.

• Knowledge of assimilating remote sensing data and ML/AI algorithms for Earth system modeling.
• Experience with ML/AI approaches for satellite data assimilation and cycling experiments.
