A deputy assigned to the court security unit works as a uniformed, sworn, firearms-qualified deputy with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. This is an armed position that provides entrance screening, building security, public assistance and law enforcement duties related to maintaining a safe, lawful, and secure environment at the Boulder County Justice Center and the Longmont Courthouse. Duties and responsibilities vary depending on assignment.
Some shifts are approximately regular county business hours, but early morning and evening assignments are possible, as well as overtime opportunities, depending upon the needs of the Sheriff’s Office.
Must have completed a State Certified Law Enforcement Training Academy and be COLORADO P.O.S.T. CERTIFIED OR CERTIFIABLE. Certifiable means that you have completed an academy and is awaiting being hired, or have certification from another entity that Colorado P.O.S.T. will accept in lieu of attending a Colorado P.O.S.T. academy. Lateral applicants will be highly considered for the position. Lateral applicants are started at a higher salary level.
Deputies assigned to the court security unit are the first line of contact with visitors and staff to either courthouse. They are uniformed representatives of both Boulder County and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies must possess skills which require professionalism, excellent communication skills with a wide variety of people, and the ability to rapidly solve problems and make sound decisions.
A deputy assigned to the Court Security Unit must have basic knowledge of screening visitors, conducting detentions and arrests, and the court processes within the 20th Judicial District of the State of Colorado. The primary job emphasis is on the safety and security of court staff, the public, Sheriff’s Office staff, and in‑custody individuals. This includes basic knowledge of the following: properly placing restraints on inmates and arrestees for transport, driving Sheriff’s Office vehicles, operating Sheriff’s Office vehicle accessories, escorting inmates to and from courtrooms, monitoring the courtrooms and inmates during court, exercising control over the courtroom during incidents, knowledge of video court, use of video court equipment, writing incident reports, knowledge of arrest standards and arrest reports, booking knowledge such as the use of NCIC/CCIC, knowledge of the records management system and the jail management system, how to use a department issued radio, knowledge of radio channels, utilizing a firearm and/or intermediate weapons in the defense of self or others, performing investigations, and conducting searches and inventories of inmates, arrestees, and property.
Deputies must also have knowledge, skills, and experience in understanding and applying state and federal law.
New employees receive an 80‑hour bank of vacation at the time of hire, in addition to 8 hours of both vacation and medical leave accruals each month.
Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.
