POSITION DESCRIPTION

Stewards Individual Placements & Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) Initiative:

Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with Ameri Corps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural and cultural resources. The Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) initiative aims to increase access to the outdoors for all Americans.

Are you passionate about expanding access to public lands and creating welcoming outdoor experiences for all visitors? Do you believe everyone should have the opportunity to explore and enjoy our National Parks? Our health, our planet, and our collective future rely on variety – in thought, ability, experience, and ideas. Join the Youth Empowerment Stewards (YES) program and contribute to strengthening park operations and enhancing the visitor experience by helping to remove barriers to outdoor access—ensuring that our national parks remain open, accessible, and welcoming to all Americans.

Role of YES Member at Medgar & Myrlie Evers Home National Monument

The mission of Medgar & Myrlie Evers Home National Monument (MEMY) is to interpret the history and legacy of Medgar and Myrlie Evers. This interpretation includes, but is not limited to, the networks and organizations Medgar helped create and worked with, and the many friendships and partnerships Medgar and Myrlie had within the state of Mississippi. The story of Medgar and Myrlie Evers is a complex one, that includes many other civil rights stories;

the park’s interpretation division uses these stories to showcase the way Medgar was risking his life every day to create a more just and fairer Mississippi, not only for his family, but for everyone. We use interpretive materials such as brochures, worksheets, reproduction of time period magazines and newspapers, photographs, and Junior Ranger booklets to achieve this goal.

Stewards Individual Placements, in partnership with Medgar & Myrlie Evers Home National Monument (MEMY) are seeking a YES service member who will be responsible for creating braille materials for visitors, as well as creating print out versions of the site’s wayside signs that are for visually impaired visitors. This intern would also work on making sure any videos/visual materials we put on the park’s social media are equipped with the right audio additions for anyone who is visually impaired, as well as making sure they are compliant with closed captions.

The YES member will also assist the park in creating connections/a partnership with the Mississippi School for the Deaf & Blind.

JOB DUTIES

To achieve the goals of this YES position, the member will:

  • Work with site staff to become familiarized with current interpretive materials to be created in Braille versions (includes brochures, handouts, and wayside signs)
  • Work on website/social media pages to ensure ADA compliance
    • Including a focus on audio descriptions and closed captioning
  • Work with the Mississippi School for the Deaf & Blind to begin a partnership
    • Including creating a contact list of ASL certified interpreters that can be contacted for services
    • Increase volunteer opportunities between the school’s staff, admin, and students
