The Stewards Individual Placement Program places individual placements across the nation in projects that build capacity, improve access to natural resources, develop and support innovative solutions, develop opportunities for service and economic development, and empower leaders.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Stewards Individual Placements & Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) Initiative:

Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with Ameri Corps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural and cultural resources. The Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) initiative aims to increase access to the outdoors for all Americans.

Join the Youth Empowerment Stewards (YES) program and contribute to strengthening park operations and enhancing the visitor experience by helping to remove barriers to outdoor access—ensuring that our national parks remain open, accessible, and welcoming to all Americans.

Role of YES Member at Prince William Forest Park

Prince William Forest Park offers recreational opportunities rooted in its legacy as the model for the New Deal era Recreational Demonstration Area program to create outdoor experiences for children, families, and adults in nature.

The Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) Ameri Corps Member at Prince William Forest Park will be an important part of the Interpretation and Education team. This YES service member will focus on recreating an audio content tour of the park’s Visitor Center which includes incorporating equitable experiences for those in the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community, create updated and accessible information for various park wayside information stands, and contribute to the redesign of the park’s Junior Ranger book to be more accessible.

JOB

DUTIES
  • Recreate an audio content tour of the park’s Visitor Center
    • Record audio descriptions of the visual information found in the museum exhibits
  • Create accessible content for park waysides
    • Focus on a new historic cabin display to ensure it meets ADA guidelines
    • Create listenable audio description of the waysides for the NPS App
  • Redesign park’s Junior Ranger book to be more accessible
  • Hike and collect data on the 37 miles of park trails
    • Collect data such as tread type, incline, and trail head access on trails and other park features to inform a more comprehensive and user friendly guide to hiking in the park
