General Overview
Our Critical Care Technicians are responsible for the care and treatment of unstable/critically ill patients, triaging emergency patients, and monitoring hospitalized pets. They operate under the supervision of specialists, the staff manager, the emergency doctor, and the department shift supervisor. This overview is not limited to the duties listed below.
Location- Boulder, CO
- Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT) – $25‑$34 based on experience and skills assessment
- Veterinary Technician Specialists (VTS) – $35‑$40 based on experience and skills assessment
- Full Time – Tuesday to Friday, 8 am–6 pm
- Conduct advanced triage of incoming phone calls by assessing clinical urgency, utilizing established protocols, and reviewing relevant medical records to support timely and accurate prioritization of patient care.
- Demonstrate proficiency in advanced veterinary medical math, including accurate calculation of drug dosages, fluid rates, constant rate infusions (CRIs), and nutritional requirements. Includes, but is not limited to: catecholamines, inotropes, anti‑coagulants.
- Acquire, prepare, and ship laboratory specimens; run automated CBCs, prepare blood films for manual differentials and platelet counts, perform various chemistries, coagulation tests, as well as collect, evaluate, and report urinalysis results.
- Provide general nursing care such as accurately obtaining and assessing patient vitals (temperature, pulse/heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, pain score, etc.), auscultating lungs, and preparing and administering nutrition.
- Perform general venipuncture, peripheral/central/arterial catheter placement and maintenance.
- Establish and maintain airways (ET tube, tracheostomy, etc.).
- Administer oxygen via cages, nasal O₂, high‑flow nasal oxygen.
- Initiate and monitor mechanical ventilation.
- Administer emergency drugs and CRIs under veterinary supervision.
- Administer blood products (whole blood, plasma, albumin, etc.).
- Provide fluid therapy including shock‑dose calculations and continuous monitoring.
- Induce and monitor anesthesia using advanced parameters.
- Prepare for and assist with surgical procedures (e.g., thoracocentesis, chest tube placement).
- Manage post‑operative recovery: monitor pain, vitals, and complications.
- Perform wound management and bandage placement (Robert Jones, splints, wet‑to‑dry dressings).
- Prepare and administer chemotherapy (using PPE and biohazard safety protocols).
- Induct, prepare, and monitor surgical patients for minor procedures (e.g., chest tube placement, peritoneal drain).
- Admit and discharge patients; communicate and educate clients; answer phone calls and schedule appointments.
- Maintain hygiene: clean, stock, and organize ICU/Isolation equipment and supplies.
- Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), or Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) with at least 2 years of applicable experience.
- Knowledge of basic veterinary practices, procedures, and terminology.
- Ability to appropriately handle, lift, and restrain animals (dogs and cats) and stand for extended periods.
- Demonstrate proper and safe venipuncture using aseptic technique and place peripheral IV catheters safely.
- Effective communication with CASE staff members.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Fluent English (speaking & reading) is required; fluency in multiple languages is a plus.
