Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students' skills and competence in one or more fields of science, including general science, earth science, biology, physiology, chemistry, and physics. The teacher will develop students' skills and abilities in scientific methods and problem‑solving, and foster an understanding of how science can be applied to solve practical problems.

Essential Functions
  • Teach knowledge and skills in science subjects in accordance with district curriculum.
  • Promote critical and creative thinking and analysis in all related subject areas.
  • Create a safe and conducive classroom environment for individualized and small‑group instruction.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, translating them into learning experiences that challenge students and make effective use of instructional time.
  • Design learning activities that demonstrate the application of science to everyday life, including research projects, demonstrations, experiments, and laboratory activities.
  • Instruct students on the proper use and care of scientific equipment, chemicals, and plant and animal life.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, modifying instructional methods to fit individual student needs.
  • Maintain familiarity with district and Connecticut State standardized tests to adapt curriculum for maximum achievement.
  • Continue to acquire professional knowledge by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Organize and maintain accurate record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance, as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensure student conduct conforms to school standards and district policies, establishing and maintaining a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinate with other professional staff, especially within grade level, and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids, and other supplies; maintain inventory records and ensure equipment is in good working order.
Additional Duties
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and central office administrators.
Equipment
  • Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
Travel Requirements
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of science subjects (general science, earth science, biology, physiology, chemistry, physics, and related areas).
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer networks and software applications.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation for professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Works in standard office and school building environments.

Certification / License Qualifications Profile
  • State Certification as a Science Teacher (or required for the position).
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
Experience
  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
