Histology Clerical Support Worker

A vacancy has arisen at University Hospitals Dorset pathology hub based at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital site for a clerical support worker working as part of the Cellular Pathology team

Main duties of the job

Responsibilities of the post will include providing a clerical support role to assist in the organisation of the Cellular Pathology service

The work will involve various clerical and administrative duties including input of data on the computer, checking patient details, basic office tasks, scanning and microscope slide archiving and retrieval. Full training will be provided. Previous experience of computers and key board skill would be an advantage. The post requires attention to detail, accuracy, commitment and an ability to work as part of a team.

The ideal candidate will be able to prioritise and organise their own workload and will have confidence in dealing with colleagues and GP's,clinicians etc. The post requires attention to detail, commitment and an ability to work as part of a team.

Job responsibilities

To comply with local and national policies for the safe, secure and confidential processing and storage of patient and other laboratory information

For maintaining confidentiality in matters concerning patients details and reports

Computer tasks as required eg data entry, posting copies of results to GPs and clinicians

To use the Laboratory Computer System (Clini Sys Winpath) according to the authorised protocols

To use Trust wide IT systems as appropriate following Trust Policies, guidelines and procedures

Maintain an efficient archive filing system for microscope slides, copy reports and to maintain accurate records of all slides leaving the department

To retrieve slides and reports as required

Receipt of specimens and following the departmental policy and standard operational procedures for the acceptance and validation of patients demographic details

Scanning forms into computer

Safe and efficient handling of patient s reports and specimens and seeking assistance when appropriate

Proper use and care of office equipment

To comply with good laboratory practices required for the standards of UKAS Accreditation (ISO
15189) including Health and Safety

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Good general education including English and Mathematics qualifications
  • Must be numerate and literate
  • Vocational NVQ2
  • RSA/Pitman Typing or word processing
  • ECDL
  • CLAIT
Experience
  • Working knowledge of using computers
  • Data entry onto computer system
  • Experience of work in a laboratory or hospital environment
Knowledge
  • Pathology computer system (Clini Sys Winpath)
  • Pathology quality management system (Q-Pulse)
  • Hospital electronic patient system
