Senior Assistant Psychologist - Liaison Psychiatry Service

An exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Assistant Psychologist to work within the Liaison Psychiatry team at University Hospitals Dorset (Poole and Bournemouth).

Employment in this post requires an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which the Trust will cover the cost of.

Main duties of the job

To support and enhance the professional psychological care of clients within the UHD Liaison Psychiatry team; providing protocol based psychological assessment and psychological interventions under the supervision of a qualified clinical psychologist, working independently according to a plan agreed with a qualified clinical psychologist and within the overall framework of the Liaison Psychiatry service policies and procedures.

To support and enhance the professional psychological support and training to mental health and non-mental health staff within the hospitals.

To assist in clinically related administration, conduct of audits, collation and analysis of statistics, development of audit and/or research projects, teaching and project work.

Person Specification Experience
  • Experience of working with adults with mental health difficulties
  • High-level communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive.
  • Experience of working with teams and professionals to promote psychological understanding and working
  • Further post-graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis
Knowledge, skills and training
  • An Upper Second or First class undergraduate degree
  • Eligibility to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society
Personal Qualities
  • An ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines. An ability to interact warmly with people with mental health problems or disabilities
  • An ability to work independently, reliably and consistently with work agreed and managed at regular intervals.
  • A high level of interpersonal skills, self- awareness, sensitivity, tact and empathy in all communications
  • Awareness of personal and professional boundaries
  • Ability to communicate sensitive information to patients, carers and colleagues in a way that addresses psychological resistance
  • An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to a mental health context
