As University Hospitals Dorset we are a three‑site acute trust with university hospital status through our partnership with Bournemouth University.
We employ around 10,000 staff and run an annual budget of £730m, supporting a £500m transformation programme to develop state‑of‑the‑art facilities.
Job OverviewWe are recruiting sonographers (Band 7 or 8a) to work across our radiology department. The role involves performing and reporting a wide range of ultrasound examinations, including obstetric, gynaecology, vascular, paediatrics, musculoskeletal and early pregnancy scans. You will work across multiple sites – Royal Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, and community diagnostic centres – and collaborate with maternity colleagues on the new Royal Bournemouth maternity unit.

All sonographers receive a Recruitment and Retention Premia payment of £5,000 per annum pro‑rata, and a relocation package worth up to £13,000.
Required HCPC registration. Base location – Royal Bournemouth Hospital (cross‑site work pending). Interview date – Friday 17 July 2026.
Main Duties- Provide efficient and effective diagnostic imaging as part of the radiology team.
- Produce high‑quality diagnostic images while optimising patient care.
- Perform autonomous ultrasound examinations and produce reports.
- Oversee implementation and monitoring of the Down’s syndrome screening quality assurance support service (DQASS) and submit a minimum of 25 paired measurements every six months.
- Collaborate with the US Clinical Lead and management team to develop ongoing education and training for ultrasound practitioners.
- Attend the UHD Ante‑Natal and Newborn Screening Programme Board Governance meetings as required.
- Qualifications: Diploma of College of Radiographers/BSc Radiography or equivalent; HCPC Registration;
Postgraduate qualification in Medical Ultrasound;
Current FMF nuchal translucency accreditation. - Experience: Ability to work independently across all ultrasound areas (obstetric, gynaecology, general abdominal); evidence of continual professional development; recent NHS experience; supervising, teaching and mentoring staff; proficiency in MSK, vascular and paediatric (neonatal hips and heads).

Good time‑management and prioritisation; ability to analyse and interpret complex information and produce accurate, concise clinical reports; effective communication and compassionate patient care; counselling skills. - Staff recruited must be available to work flexibly across all Trust locations.
