Staff Nurse - Neonatal Unit

University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) is calling for dedicated nurses to join our dynamic and supportive Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) team. Within NICU at UHD you will Provide critical care and specialist nursing to preterm and newborn babies requiring intensive and special care. UHD Neonatal Unit is a level 2 centre caring for preterm babies of 27 weeks gestation and above as well as sick term babies. We use a range of therapies such as ventilation, cerebral cooling and cerebral function monitoring.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 5 NICU Nurse, your responsibilities include:

  • Delivering Specialised Neonatal Care:
    Provide high-quality nursing care to premature and critically ill newborns in a level 2 centre, including ventilated and intensive care patients, in line with clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Monitoring Vital Signs
  • Safely Administering Medications and Treatments
  • Parental Support and Education
  • Collaborating with Multidisciplinary Teams
  • Maintaining Accurate Documentation
  • Participating in Clinical Decision-Making
  • Professional Development

This role demands clinical precision, compassion, and excellent communication skills to ensure optimal care and outcomes for newborns in critical need.

About us

UHD are investing, developing and transforming Trust services in line with the New Hospital Programme. As part of this, some services may move site this year or next, either temporarily or permanently. Recruiting Managers will be happy to answer any service-specific questions at interview.

If a role or service relocates as part of a planned move, excess mileage will not be reimbursed. Travel from home to the new work base will be classed as a normal commute. Any other changes will be managed under Trust or national terms and conditions.

Person Specification Qualification
  • Registration on Part 1 (RGN/RN Adult General), 8 (RSCN/Child Branch), 12 (RM), 15 (Project 2000 Children's Nurse) of NMC Register or equivalent
  • Diploma in relevant subject
Experience Other
  • Ability to work as part of a team and project a positive image
  • Problem solving approach and skills
  • Decision making skills - clinical and non-clinical
  • Ability to use computer or willingness to learn
  • Ability to work under pressure, thinking and acting coherently and with respect to others
