Director of Residence Life (Open)

Position Type: 12‑month live‑out, full‑time

Compensation: $95,000 – $105,000 per year.

Job Summary

The Residence Life program at Bowie State University serves the needs of approximately 1,700 residents. The Director of Residence Life is responsible for maintaining and advancing the department’s mission, enhancing resident development, and managing the recruitment, training, and evaluation of Resident Directors, Graduate Student Assistants, and other staff.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Student Affairs, College Student Personnel Administration, Counseling, or a related field.

• Minimum of five years of progressive experience supervising professional hall staff and central office involvement.

• Strong organizational, administrative, and communication skills and a practical application of resident development theory.

Responsibilities
  • Set overall direction and goals, ensuring resident focus and consistency with the University’s shared governance concept.
  • Provide resident satisfaction assessments.
  • Address staff and resident concerns with the highest level of customer service.
  • Coordinate recruitment and selection of professional staff.
  • Directly train, supervise, and evaluate full‑time professional Resident Directors; indirectly supervise paraprofessional staff and Summer Conference Workers.
  • Provide opportunities for professional growth and development for professional and paraprofessional staff.
  • Serve as a resource to Resident Directors in programming, staff training/development, budget management, supervision, and accountability.
  • Compile information to complete weekly, monthly, semester, and annual reports with data from housing, program efforts, student conduct, and other pertinent areas.
  • Coordinate the Resident Director/Graduate Student Assistant on‑call schedule. Oversee Resident Director development of a Resident Assistant on‑call schedule each semester.
  • Work with Resident Assistant and Resident Director committee chairs to plan training and development for all live‑in staff (pre‑service, fall training, monthly in‑service, mid‑year, and summer).
  • Coordinate the Resident Assistant evaluation process each semester and maintain employee records.
  • Oversee implementation of all hall programming efforts using the department’s programming model and standards, encouraging collaboration with faculty and staff.
  • Monitor Resident Assistant and Resident Director personnel procedures to ensure consistency and fairness; generate, sign, and issue all probation and termination letters for the community assistants.
  • With the Director of Student Conduct & Community Standards, monitor Resident Director case management for timely adjudication of student policy violations.
  • Coordinate annual training for Resident Directors on student conduct management software, judicial case management, and hearing procedures.
  • Act as second‑level hearing officer for higher‑level separable residence hall policy violations.
  • Coordinate revisions and modifications to manuals and other training materials, including the traditional hall contract and resident handbook.
  • Assist with management of the campus public‑private apartment residential community, meeting bi‑monthly with partners.
Conditions of Employment

  • Evenings, weekends, and breaks required.
  • Flexible work hours to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Essential employee responsibilities may require on‑campus work during emergencies and campus closures.
