Job Description

The Associate Director of Risk Management will lead the development and implementation of Bowie State University’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) methods and processes. This role is crucial in ensuring the university’s financial stability, safety, and compliance by overseeing all aspects of risk management, including workplace safety, workers’ compensation, liability, and insurance programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Risk Management Program Development
    • Lead the design and execution of a risk management plan aligned with the university’s strategic goals.
    • Develop, implement, and enforce comprehensive risk management policies and procedures.
    • Recommend and evaluate systems and develop tools for effective risk management processes.
    • Conduct training programs to build awareness and ensure compliance across the university.
    • Monitor and report on the effectiveness of risk management processes, driving continuous improvement.
  • Compliance and Advisory Services
    • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards.
    • Serve as the primary advisor on risk-related matters, providing strategic guidance to university leadership.
    • Advise departments on accident prevention, risk reduction, and loss control strategies.
  • Workers’ Compensation and Safety
    • Oversee the administration of the university’s workers’ compensation program, including compliance with safety regulations, claims management, and the processing and payment of insurance premiums.
    • Oversee safety programs to ensure workplace compliance with safety regulations.
  • Emergency Management
    • Collaborate with the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police to integrate the university’s Crisis Management and Emergency Management programs into risk management operations.
    • Develop and implement emergency plans to enhance institutional resilience and continuity.
  • Leadership and Collaboration
    • Lead and manage the Risk Management team, fostering professional development and a proactive approach to risk management.
    • Oversee environmental health and safety projects, ensuring risk assessments and mitigation strategies are in place.
    • Collaborate across departments (Human Resources, Public Safety, Facilities Management) to manage and mitigate risks.
Qualifications
  • Educational Requirements
    • Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Business Administration, Finance, Public Administration, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Experience
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the administration of risk management programs, including investigation of workers’ compensation, liability, and property claims.
    • Proven experience in project management and risk assessment.
  • Certifications
    • Preferred certifications or designations include Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Financial Risk Manager (FRM), Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), and Professional Risk Manager (PRM).
    • Additional professional certifications or designations, such as Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) or Associate Emergency Manager (AEM), are preferred.
  • Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
    • Proven expertise in developing and implementing Enterprise Risk Management programs, including a strong knowledge of risk analysis methodologies and frameworks, performing assessments and audits, prioritizing risks, and designing effective risk management strategies and tools.
    • The ability to conduct in-depth research and analyze complex data and situations to spot potential risks and develop effective solutions.
    • Strong understanding of regulations and compliance requirements relevant to universities.
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with a customer-focused approach.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
