Provide technical support in locating underground utilities, testing and certifying backflow prevention equipment, troubleshooting equipment problems and supervising technical maintenance work/installation services for all underground utilities (water, gas, sanitary and/or steam) and building piped services. May supervise apprentices and less‑skilled workers.
Duties & Responsibilities- Independently direct, plan, organize, estimate, schedule and inspect technical maintenance and installation work performed by unskilled, semi‑skilled and skilled workers for all underground utilities and building piped services.
- Provide on‑the‑job training for apprentices and less‑skilled employees in plumbing/piped services.
- Research, analyze new techniques and develop modification approaches.
- Provide engineering consultation and installation services for research equipment.
- Provide design/build services for underground utilities and building piped systems.
- Make scale layouts manually or using a computer to provide designs for jobs.
- Assist in preparing reports, analysis and correspondence.
- May supervise contractors during utility/facility projects on a project‑by‑project basis.
- Coordinate and cooperate closely with other skilled crafts personnel and supervisors.
- Adhere to and enforce all applicable state, university and departmental personnel policies and procedures.
- Organize, maintain and clean job sites, tools and machinery.
- Maintain, repair, sharpen, adjust and safely operate tools and machinery.
- Ensure adequate supplies; materials and equipment are maintained to accomplish tasks/projects.
- Prepare estimates of time, labor and materials to be used on assigned tasks.
- Responsible for personal safety and uphold departmental safety procedures.
- Attend all required safety meetings.
Comprehensive knowledge of basic engineering principles, methods and techniques of plumbing trade; thorough knowledge of OSHA/MOSH regulations; skill in practical application of electronics, hydraulics and mechanics; skill in reading, interpreting and working from blueprints and schematics; ability to communicate effectively orally, in writing and by computer; ability to supervise apprentices; plan, organize maintenance work; determine sufficient cost estimates prepared by others;
prepare specifications for tools, equipment, materials and supplies; prepare summaries and reports.
High School Diploma or GED. Trade‑related secondary schooling desired.
Six years of progressively responsible experience in pipe and installation services including all underground utilities (water, gas, sanitary lines and/or steam), vents, HVAC and related equipment.
Certification/licenses: current WSSC Master Plumber’s License or Maryland State Master Plumber’s License.
Conditions Of EmploymentEssential employee subject to a 24‑hour, 7‑day operation. Must work evenings and weekends as necessary. Must work in and around fixed equipment and machinery, from lifts, ladders and scaffolding, manipulate heavy equipment and tools up to 70 lbs, operate machinery, work in hazardous environments, confined spaces, adverse weather, wear PPE. Medical inquiries may be required. Maintain required driver’s license with no more than 5 points.
Subject to drug and alcohol education and testing as required under Federal and State regulations. May be assigned duties requiring forklift operator certification. Union position.
