Job Overview
The Group Exercise Instructor will lead members, in a group environment, through a pre-arranged format of exercises designed to enhance overall fitness, strength and endurance, while ensuring that the safety of the members is not compromised. The instructor also serves as a resource to educate members on various aspects of fitness.
Major Responsibilities- Pre-class Preparation:
Arrive 10–15 minutes early, interact with members, answer questions, inquire about their fitness progress, introduce and orient new participants. Ensure clothing and footwear are appropriate for demonstrating correct form. - Prepare music, ensuring all tapes are rewound and ready; avoid music with offensive language.
- Verify that all equipment is functioning correctly and microphones are ready.
- Introduce yourself and the class format.
- Identify any first-timers and assess them privately.
- Deliver clear verbal instructions, maintain appropriate volume, tempo, and atmosphere.
- Continuously monitor participants to ensure correct form and offer variations for all fitness levels.
- Create a motivational and fun environment.
- Remove all music and return the microphone.
- Leave the room in order for the next class.
- Answer any questions or concerns from participants.
- Solicit feedback about the class.
- Ensure classes begin and end punctually, adjusting flow as needed to adhere to the schedule.
- Follow closing procedures for the last class of the day, as outlined by the Group Exercise Director.
- If unable to teach a scheduled class, secure a qualified substitute and notify the Director.
- Maintain consistent class schedules and minimize cancellations.
- Attend required staff meetings.
- Follow proper time recording procedures.
- Prepare incident or witness reports as required.
- Maintain a positive, professional attitude toward responsibilities, colleagues, and members.
- Promote Gold’s Gym and GGX whenever possible.
- At least six months of teaching in a group exercise format.
- Knowledge of safe exercise technique and group exercise principles.
- Knowledge of basic physiology and body mechanics.
- Ability to perform a variety of exercise routines.
- Positive and effective interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to operate and troubleshoot audio equipment.
- Proof of specialized skills (e.g., Yoga, Pilates, Body Pump, Body Attack) if applicable.
- Minimum of 6 months teaching in a group environment.
- Group fitness certification by ACE, AFAA, or ACSM.
- Current CPR certification and basic first aid training.
- Physical demands include: lift light weights, bend, squat, jump, run, reach, walk, hop, spin, and kick.
