Assistant Professor of English in Creative Writing – Nonfiction
Join Montana State University, Office of Student Engagement, as a tenure‑track Assistant Professor in Creative Writing – Nonfiction, starting mid‑August 2026.
Position OverviewTenure‑track, 9‑month academic year.
Responsible for teaching a range of creative writing courses (creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry), course development, scholarship/creative activity, mentoring, advising and service to the department, university, community, and profession.
Duties and Responsibilities- Teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced creative writing courses in creative nonfiction, and optionally fiction or poetry.
- Develop and revise courses, incorporating inquiry and AI considerations.
- Produce scholarship or creative work appropriate for a Carnegie R‑1 university.
- Mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students.
- Provide general service to the department, university, community, and profession.
- MFA or PhD in Creative Nonfiction earned before the start date.
- Active record of publication in creative nonfiction.
- Demonstrated potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
- Record of effectiveness in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
- Ability to collaborate beyond the English Department, fostering outreach across campus and community.
- Inspire and mentor students.
- Work toward meeting/exceeding tenure requirements.
- Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Possess effective interpersonal skills and maintain cooperative relationships.
- Appreciate all perspectives and promote a diverse, inclusive community.

All degree requirements must be completed by August 2026.
