Job Overview

The History & Philosophy Department maintains a hiring pool of non‑tenure‑track applicants who will be considered for instructor appointments when courses become available. Appointments are part‑time, varying from a few weeks to a full academic year.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach introductory‑level history courses.
  • Occasionally teach upper‑division courses in the same fields, as needed.
  • Deliver courses according to departmental and budgetary requirements.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to support student learning.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Minimum Master’s Degree in History or a related field.
  • Academic background commensurate with teaching in the discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and engaging diverse students and colleagues.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Terminal degree in a relevant field.
  • Previous teaching experience in similar courses.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student, faculty, and staff diversity.
Successful Candidate Will
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Possess effective interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Be able to relate to and establish rapport with a college student population.
  • Exercise good judgment and self‑motivation.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Have strong interest in student success and be committed to quality teaching.
Union Information

This position may be a union position. Any appointment of 0.5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU). Positions below 0.5 FTE are not represented.

Additional Information

Position is open for an indefinite period and will be maintained in the hiring pool for up to two years. Appointments are on a part‑time basis and the salary depends on courses taught and duration.
