Position Overview:

The Youth Program Coordinator (YPC) staff position is responsible for supporting all Montana Conservation Corps (MCC) youth program activities from office and field locations. Primary duties include the daily management of the youth program, coordinating logistics, school visits and recruitment events, and leading training during the Leadership Development Program (LDP). This position will split time between administrative, logistical and field support duties, including training Youth Program Leaders, coordinating with project partners and then shifting to field-based support in the summer months.

Field-based work includes: providing technical guidance as necessary and ensuring compliance with MCC policies and procedures. The YPC will assist with leader check-ins, training, evaluations, field support and administrative tasks for youth program leaders (Ameri Corps positions) as directed by the Youth Program Manager. During the field season the YPC will conduct site visits which will involve traveling to crews’ worksites and camping overnight with the group.

Typically, these are 2-3 days in length but additional field time may be required depending on needs of the crews and/or if leader coverage is needed unexpectedly. The YPC is expected to maintain good communication between all youth program staff, other MCC offices, project partners and crews in the field.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Overall Program and Administrative Support:
  • Support the youth programs’ Leaders, including ongoing training, feedback, and contribution to behavior management strategies or discipline, and periodic written evaluation of leader performance
  • Attend and lead school visits, community events and career fairs during the spring season to support youth engagement and recruitment efforts
  • Attend and support statewide trainings when requested
  • Conduct regular debriefs with Leaders, ensuring high quality implementation of MCC leadership development programming and curriculum; is familiar with MCC program objectives as well as education and training curriculum
  • Collect and submit paperwork in a timely fashion, paperwork includes: site visit reports, project accomplishments, hitch reports, incident reports, discipline documentation, timesheets, photos, and program evaluations.
  • Assist with planning and implementing of all program operations as requested
  • Cultivate a welcoming environment for all members and staff
  • Provide project oversight and technical support throughout the LDP and field season which includes leading field skills and tools training and providing ongoing support to leaders with technical skills.
  • Work with partner agencies and organizations to develop Project Information Sheets and coordinate project work to communicate with crews the specific details regarding project logistics
  • Instill a culture of professionalism and care, cultivate safety awareness within crews; ensure compliance with MCC policies and safety standards within all crews
  • Visit youth crews in the field to provide guidance, technical/programmatic support, and assistance to Leaders as well as ensure that activities are in compliance with MCC policies/procedures, and that project accomplishments meet project partner expectations. Field visits will involve traveling and camping overnight with crews.
  • Coordinate and organize gear and tool cache inventory systems and usage
  • Manage and maintain vehicle fleet in conjunction with the Youth Program Manager
  • Participate in an emergency On-Call schedule, coordinating response to issues in the field and providing emotional and behavioral support to leaders and participants
