Brief

Position Overview

Instructor to teach courses in political science open sub‑fields including but not limited to American Politics, Political Theory, Public Administration and Policy, International Relations, and Research Methods.

Contract term is variable—part‑time basis with durations ranging from a couple of weeks to an academic year. Salary is commensurate with experience and dependent on the number of courses taught.

General Statement

Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non‑tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding. The department and hiring authority will review and evaluate submitted application materials, maintaining applicants in the pool for two years. Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Teach on‑campus or online courses.
  • Advise, evaluate, and assist students.
  • Participate in professional development and faculty activities as required.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Master’s Degree in political science, public administration, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduates.
  • Experience working with and engaging diverse students and colleagues.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • PhD in Political Science, Public Administration, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching political science courses.
  • Knowledge of college student development.
  • Commitment to student, faculty, and staff diversity.

Position

Special Requirements /Additional Information
  • Non‑Tenure Track Faculty – Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU). Faculty covered by AFMSU must begin paying membership dues or representation fees within thirty (30) days of hire. Any position less than .5 FTE is not represented by the Union and is not required to pay dues. If the FTE changes during employment, the representational status may change.

    Exceptions include those who have successfully completed a PEI exam or any faculty working in Extension.

The Department

The Department of Political Science has eight tenure‑track faculty and 150–200 undergraduate students, offers an MPA degree, and maintains about 20 MPA students on average.
