Brief

Position Overview

The College of Letters and Sciences CLS Seminar Program is now accepting applications from candidates with demonstrated and effective teaching experience to serve as teaching faculty in our CLS courses. Successful candidates will facilitate discussion on a variety of texts and topics and exemplify expert learning in an exciting, multi‑disciplinary seminar.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a seminar course of approximately 15–18 students.
  • Attend CLS faculty meetings once per week (usually Tuesdays or Wednesdays around noon) to discuss texts, pedagogy, and classroom concerns.
  • Collaborate with student mentors and program staff (e.g., Sophomore Surge mentoring program or CLS peer mentor) which may include supervisory duties and grade assignment.
  • Hold regular office hours and meet with students outside of scheduled class as needed.
  • Participate in program and university assessment, including assignment submission and evaluation.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in the appropriate field with an academic background commensurate with teaching one or more of the specialty areas listed above.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and engaging diverse students and colleagues within and outside a program.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Academic or professional experience in the field.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching interdisciplinary courses.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student, faculty, and staff diversity.
Successful Candidate Will
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Be able to relate to, mentor, and inspire students and build rapport with a diverse student body.
  • Have effective interpersonal skills, collaborating successfully with faculty, mentors, and staff.
  • Be committed to quality teaching and skilled in utilizing engaging pedagogy that involves students in the learning process.
  • Take initiative and work well both independently and in a group setting.
  • Dedicate themselves to supporting and enhancing Montana State University’s initiative for diversity, equity, and inclusiveness.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information.
Position

Special Requirements

The position may be a union position. Affiliation is determined by job duties and the collective bargaining unit. For positions 0.5 FTE or greater, the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU) represents staff and may choose to pay membership dues. Positions less than 0.5 FTE are not represented by the union and are not required to pay dues.
