Brief Position Overview
This posting gathers a pool of qualified applicants for possible Librarian and related professional openings on an as‑needed basis. Work may involve reference and instructional service, functional specialties, and/or special projects.
Duties and Responsibilities
Vary depending on assignment. Possible areas include:
- Reference and instruction
- Instructional technology and/or instructional design
- Scholarly communication
- Collection development
- Digital initiatives
- Archives and special collections cataloging and metadata
- Special projects
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- A Master’s degree from an ALA‑accredited graduate program or a terminal graduate degree appropriate to the position.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- Previous relevant experience in an academic environment.
- Experience in an instruction or public services role in a college or university.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
The working hours are set but require flexibility to meet occasional vacation and sick leave demands of the department. Union affiliation is determined by job duties and the collective bargaining unit.
Additional details:
• Non‑Tenure Track Faculty – Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU).
• Positions less than .5 FTE are not represented by the Union and are not required to pay dues.
• Exceptions:
Individuals who have completed a PEI exam or faculty working in Extension are exempt from the Union.
