The School of Film & Photography at Montana State University-Bozeman invites applications for a full-time, tenure-eligible Assistant Professor of Film beginning August 2027. We seek a colleague with the knowledge to teach production courses in the School’s undergraduate and graduate film curriculum with a focus on fiction film production.
The proposed tenure-track faculty position will be a key contributor to our film undergraduate program and our award-winning M.F.A in Science and Natural History Filmmaking.
The candidate is expected to teach in our core BA Film and BFA in Integrated Lens-based Media programs, develop and maintain an active creative research agenda, and participate in service responsibilities.

We aim to find a colleague whose creative work transcends traditional boundaries between film and related media with the ability to teach subjects across the school’s undergraduate and graduate filmmaking curriculum.

- Develop and maintain a creative research agenda and record of accomplishment
- Demonstrate teaching effectiveness and participate in program development and assessment
- Advise undergraduate students and serve on MFA graduate committees
- Participate in curriculum development and assessment
- Contribute to recruitment, retention, and outreach activities
- Participate in School, College, and University committees
- MFA or other terminal degree in Film, Media Production, or related fields
- Active filmmaking agenda with a distinguished public record of original creative works and/or comparable professional work in narrative filmmaking
- Experience in college-level teaching
- Ability to teach comprehensive fiction production courses in the undergraduate program
- Ability to teach film production across all levels
- Ability to teach specialty courses in directing, cinematography, and lighting
- Openness to teaching and mentoring students in an array of filmmaking styles and voices
- Ability to teach in a university community and support the success of students from varying backgrounds
Owing to the breadth and integration of our programs, candidates who demonstrate experience, education, knowledge & additional interest, and expertise in one or more of the following areas will be given preference:
- Ability to teach nonfiction production courses at the undergraduate level and in our MFA Science and Natural History Program
- Experience working on-set or additional relevant production skills and field of experience
- Be able to work closely with other faculty in a collegiate environment and contribute to the school’s academic mission.
