Work location:

Butte, MT (preferred). Open to other Montana service locations (Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls, Helena, Missoula) and South Dakota locations.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in safety and health or a related field.
  • Certification in safety (CSP) or industrial hygiene (CIH) preferred; must be willing to obtain in the future if not currently possessed.
  • Electric and natural gas utility experience preferred, but not required.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Proficient in recordkeeping and computer applications.
  • First Aid/CPR certification (or ability to acquire).
  • Commitment to safe working practices and knowledge of safety policies/procedures.
  • Demonstrate and maintain an excellent safety record.
Duties
  • Support management in deployment of existing safety products and programs; develop approaches to address safety and environmental issues.
  • Support program administration including medical surveillance, facilitation of drug and alcohol plan, pre‑employment requirements and DOT qualified driver files.
  • Lead Public Safety School Programs; develop required outreach materials and effectively monitor third‑party requirements.
  • Actively monitor and process OSHA recordkeeping activities and completion of required annual surveys; provide statistical information as needed.
  • Identify safety and environmental challenges and interact closely with employees at all levels to solve these issues.
  • Provide expert opinions on safety aspects of plans, procedures, practices, standards, specifications and systems to achieve optimal control or reduction of hazards and exposures.
  • Track and maintain records related to safety and environmental issues, including safety observations, safety accountability interviews and hazard tracking and correction systems.
  • Assist in investigation/analysis of incidents and prepare reports and presentations.
  • Ensure continuous worksite reviews and inspections to confirm compliance with all applicable North Western Energy safety requirements and government regulations.
  • Develop effective safety training and safety meeting materials; facilitate delivery to assigned areas to provide knowledge and skills necessary to recognize hazards and perform jobs safely and effectively.
  • Identify conditions and actions that may cause injury, illness, or property damage; recommend corrective actions and track issues until resolved.
  • Identify ergonomic issues; recommend and implement ergonomic solutions and follow up to ensure effectiveness.
  • Maintain knowledge of current North Western Energy safety requirements and applicable government regulations (OSHA, DOT, etc.).
  • Represent the company with presentations to the general public, contractors and emergency responders regarding potential hazards of electricity and natural gas.
  • Perform individual lifts and carries office supplies up to 35 pounds.

Salary and Levels
  • Safety Professional 1 – Starting range: $55,600–$83,400. Entry‑level, bachelor's degree required or equivalent education/experience.
  • Safety Professional 2 – Starting range: $64,800–$97,200. Mid‑level; must have utility experience, safety expertise or bachelor's degree; preferred certification (CHST, CUSP, GSP, etc.).
  • Safety Professional 3 – Starting range: $74,300–$111,500. Mid‑to senior level; must have utility experience; certification required (CHST, CUSP, ASP, or CSP). GSP designation does not fulfill this requirement.
