Position: Cook III (Applicant Pool)

Cook III (Applicant Pool) – Montana State University – Office of Student Engagement

Position Overview

The Culinary Services Department hires motivated team members who are excited to actively participate in the ever-changing world of the high‑paced food industry. The Cook III prepares, cooks, and serves a wide variety of recipes in mass quantities in accordance with standard operating procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise daily activities, staff, and production in assigned station(s) within a large volume/high activity dining hall or retail operation.
  • Oversee, provide training, and assign tasks for a shift of up to 13 full time and 30 student and temporary staff.
  • Ensure staff follows all recipes and meets standard operating procedures and compliance rules.
  • Execute the production plan and service schedules/methods, ensuring quality product is served in an appealing manner and portion control guidelines are followed.
  • Monitor inventory, control food and waste costs, keep records, and order, receive, and stock food/products accordingly.
  • Distribute and store foods (hot and cold), clean assignment area, and maintain equipment per the sanitarian’s recommendations.
  • Ensure compliance with sanitation guidelines and food handling and storage FDA codes directed by MSU’s Registered Sanitarian.
  • Interact positively and professionally with customers.
  • Assist with recipe maintenance, development, and testing.
  • Provide cross‑functional support during employee absences or high volume serving times, performing other general kitchen duties as needed.
  • Contribute to the team by performing other duties as needed to support the department’s mission.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Progressively responsible high‑volume cooking and/or cooking multiple cuisines experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Progressive experience leading and/or training staff.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Experience executing kitchen production.
  • Experience with inventory control.
Successful Candidate Will
  • Exhibit interest in culinary arts and good judgment concerning taste and aesthetics of food quality.
  • Work effectively with CS staff in a team‑oriented environment, providing excellent customer service.
  • Work well individually or on a team.
  • Exhibit strong communication skills, verbally and in writing.
  • Exercise initiative and good judgment consistently.
  • Show excellent attention to detail and accurate record‑keeping skills.
  • Prioritize and organize workload to complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Adapt quickly to changing priorities.
  • Represent the department and the University in a professional and courteous manner.
Physical Demands
  • Normal service areas, kitchen, cooler, freezer, dock environments.
  • Stationary and/or moving around for long periods of time.
  • Frequently move, transport, and place containers/products weighing up to 50 lbs, occasionally up to 100 lbs.
  • Occasionally move product up and down stairs.
  • Bend, kneel, stretch and move about while stocking products.
  • Grip handles on small kitchen utensils and equipment.
  • Perform repetitive motions related to job duties.
  • Regular exposure to cleaning chemicals.
