About OnX
OnX is a pioneer in digital outdoor navigation, founded in Montana and growing to over 400 hybrid and remote employees. We create regional “Basecamps” that bring together onXers for connection, inspiration, and a shared passion for the outdoors. Our technology delivers dynamic outdoor experiences every day by combining cutting‑edge outdoor expertise with industry‑leading software.
As a Data Engineer, you’ll design, build, and scale the lakehouse architecture that fuels analytics, machine learning, and AI. You’ll modernize our data ecosystem to make it discoverable, reliable, governed, and ready for self‑service and intelligent automation.
Responsibilities- Architecture and Design
Build and evolve the onX Iceberg‑based lakehouse, balance scalability, cost, and performance; set data‑layer standards (Raw, Curated, Certified); create a metadata‑first semantic layer; collaborate with BI and business stakeholders on domain models and metrics. - Data Pipeline Development
Develop scalable, reliable ingestion and transformation pipelines using GCP tools (Spark, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, Big Query, Dataplex, Cloud Composer); implement batch and streaming frameworks with schema enforcement, partitioning, and lineage; enforce data quality contracts at every layer. - MLOps and Advanced Workflows
Integrate feature stores, model registries, and monitoring into the platform; build orchestration and observability patterns; develop reusable microservices for training, deployment, and scoring; implement self‑healing to reduce MTTR. - Governance, Metadata, and Self‑Service Enablement
Automate governance with metadata‑driven access controls, sensitivity tagging, and lineage; maintain a semantic layer using GCP Dataplex; extend metadata models to enable explainable, machine‑readable data across pipelines. - Collaboration and Enablement
Partner with BI, Product, Marketing, and security teams; mentor peers; contribute to KTLO and modernization projects.
onX offers a distributed workforce. You can work from a corporate office, a Basecamp, or a Connection Hub. Basecamps are virtual communities located in Austin, Charlotte, Denver, Kalispell, Minneapolis, Portland, Salt Lake City, and Seattle. Connection Hubs are in Boise, Charleston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Phoenix, Richmond, Spokane, and Vermont.
What You’ll Bring General- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of professional software development, focused on web client development.
- A passion for continuous improvement and alignment with onX’s Company Values.
- Permanent U.S. work authorization.
- Deep experience building pipelines on GCP (Spark, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, Big Query, Composer, Dataplex).

- Expertise in data modeling, schema evolution, batch‑and‑streaming optimization.
- Hands‑on with Apache Iceberg or similar table formats (Delta, Hudi).
- Knowledge of MLOps frameworks and support for semantic layers.
- Familiarity with event‑driven architectures and near‑real‑time processing.
- Understanding of data governance, quality, and compliance principles.
- Proficiency with orchestration, observability, and CI/CD for data workloads.
- Design‑system leadership and mentorship experience.
- Think in reusable system patterns, not one‑off pipelines.
- Leverage metadata and semantics as strategic assets.
- Bridge technical gaps between teams.
Salary range: $125,000–$145,000 (based on experience, skills, and certifications). Full‑time employees receive a grant of common share options, a potential annual bonus of 10%, and a 401(k) with matching.
