Interim Finance Manager - Charity

We’re looking for an Interim Finance Manager to take ownership of the finances of a charity, support its leadership team and manage a small team. This interim position offers a varied remit, from overseeing everyday accounting activity to guiding budgets and managing year-end requirements. Alongside keeping the finances running smoothly, you’ll have scope to simplify processes and improve the information available to decision-makers.

You'll be working closely with the leadership team including the CEO.

What you’ll be doing Delivering monthly financial results with clear explanations of performance, alongside quarterly outlooks and the annual spending plan. Working with budget managers to understand their figures and assess financial implications. Keeping accounting records accurate, overseeing transaction processing and reconciliations, and maintaining the asset register. Tracking funds with different spending restrictions and monitoring available reserves. Coordinating statutory accounts and external audit activity, meeting charity accounting (SORP) requirements, and overseeing VAT returns and Gift Aid submissions.

Forecasting cash requirements, maintaining banking relationships and highlighting risks to the organisation’s finances. Managing a small finance team through clear priorities, coaching and practical guidance. Reviewing existing ways of working and introducing better use of systems and automation. Evaluate and implement measures for process improvement What you’ll bring You’ll be comfortable moving between detailed accounting work and broader discussions about financial performance.

A sound understanding of charity finance will be valuable, particularly fund accounting, reporting obligations and financial governance. The role will suit someone who can explain financial matters clearly, build productive relationships outside finance, identify and implement process improvements, and give colleagues the support they need. The assignment will run for up to 6 months initially, with scope to extend or become permanent thereafter.
