Utilities Maintenance Technician – Sewer Collections

Manatee County Government – Work That Matters

Work Location: 4524 66th Street West, Bradenton, Florida 34205

Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm (On‑call/Standby Required)

Expected Starting Hourly Range: $20.68 – $29.59

This physically demanding position involves climbing into excavation pits up to 18 ft. deep, digging, lifting up to 50 lbs., and working in wet or hot conditions. Duties include maintaining and repairing sewer lines and cleanouts as part of a team or independently. The role performs entry‑level, semi‑skilled or skilled maintenance, construction, and/or mechanical tasks involved in the continuous operation of Manatee County’s Wastewater Systems.

Position level and salary will be dependent on qualifications (DOQ).

Work Environment

Indoor/outdoor; high noise environment. Lifting up to 50 lbs. alone; up to 100 lbs. with assistance.

Essential Functions
  • Perform and/or assist with skilled and semi‑skilled tasks in maintaining, repairing, and operating equipment and facilities associated with the County’s wastewater underground sewage gravity lines, manholes, lift stations, and force mains.
  • Construct layouts, establish grades, read and interpret blueprints, utility maps, and record drawings.
  • Operate and maintain service equipment including utility service trucks, backhoes, dump trucks, equipment trailers, loaders, sewer cleaning equipment, TV inspection equipment, flushing and sealing equipment; metal cutting and welding equipment; pipe cutters; dewatering systems; pumps; locating devices; and a wide variety of powered and unpowered hand tools.
  • Train new technicians and serve in a “lead” capacity when required.
  • Supervise installations, rebuilds, and repairs of wastewater pipelines and manholes; isolate wastewater lines for repairs, inspection, or construction; form and pour concrete; rebuild and restore all types of roadways, curbs, and sidewalks; adjust manhole and valve box rims and covers to grade; perform building and grounds maintenance as needed.
  • Organize and prepare parts, equipment, and tools for the day’s work; maintain daily work records and complete reports on work activities; ensure job site safety through traffic control and equipment location; act as competent person on job sites for confined space and excavation safety compliance in the absence of a supervisor; fill out work orders; respond to after‑hours emergency repair calls.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including understanding and following oral and written instructions and other materials (manuals, schematics, maps, etc.).
  • Perform other related work (including weather or extreme emergency duties) as required.
Minimum Qualifications Education Requirement
  • High school graduate/equivalent. Participation in a rotating stand‑by/on‑call schedule is required.
Experience Requirement
  • Tech IA: No experience needed.
  • Tech IB: Minimum of one (1) year (2080 hours) of experience in repair and maintenance or installation of sewage system pumps and equipment in a utility or closely related system desired.
  • Tech II: Minimum of three (3) years (6 240 hours) of experience in repair and maintenance or installation of sewage system pumps and equipment in a utility or closely related system.
  • Tech III: Minimum of five (5) years (10 400 hours) of experience in repair and maintenance or installation of sewage system pumps and equipment in a utility or closely related system.
Certification Requirement
  • Tech IB: Class “C” Wastewater Technician Certification; completion of two (2) training classes from the Career Ladder Training Class Menu.
  • Tech II: Class “B” Wastewater Technician Certification; completion of five (5) training classes from the Career Ladder Training Class Menu.
  • Tech III: Class “A” Wastewater Technician Certification; completion of nine (9) training classes from the Career Ladder Training Class Menu.
Driver’s License Requirement
  • Tech IA: Must possess and maintain valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License, Class B OR obtain CDL permit prior to employment and obtain the CDL within one hundred twenty (120) days of hire.
