Position: 14-16 Learning Assistant

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Progression to Learning & Work Department as a 14-16 Learning Assistant.

As a 14–16 Learning Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting young people with a range of additional learning needs, social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) challenges, behavioural needs and autism spectrum conditions. Working closely with learners who may have experienced barriers to education, you will build positive, trusting relationships that promote engagement, confidence and a sense of belonging.

This rewarding role requires patience, resilience, empathy and strong communication skills, alongside a proactive and inclusive approach to supporting individual learning and wellbeing. The successful candidate will be committed to safeguarding, maintaining high expectations and helping young people overcome challenges to achieve their potential in a safe, supportive and nurturing environment.

This is a term-time role working 32.5 hours per week, 38 weeks per year.

Responsibilities include:
  • To provide learning support for 14 – 16-year-old students with a range of additional learning needs or behavioural issues in or out of class and other college settings such as visits and residentials.
  • To provide verbal and written feedback on learner progress and accessibility issues.
  • To take notes on behalf of students
  • To acquire and share knowledge within appropriate guidelines of a range of support issues.
  • To keep up-to-date records.
  • To attend appropriate meetings.
  • To assist in the preparation of teaching aids and materials.
  • Clerical duties, i.e. filing, photocopying, telephone duties and general office practices.
  • As a term of your employment, you can be required to undertake such other duties, temporarily or on a continuing basis, as may be required of you commensurate with your grade/level in the college.

Education & Training
  • GCSE 4 – 9 or equivalent level 2 qualification in Maths, or be prepared to pass a test before the interview to demonstrate level 2 ability, and then, if appointed, achieve within an agreed timescale
  • GCSE 4 - 9 or equivalent level 2 qualification in English, or be prepared to pass a test before the interview to demonstrate level 2 ability, and then, if appointed, achieve within an agreed timescale
Experience
  • Experience of supporting young people with a range of additional learning needs and/or behavioural issues (Voluntary work and student placements are applicable)
  • Awareness of techniques appropriate to supporting 14 – 16-year-olds with behavioural issues.
  • Working knowledge of Safeguarding, Child Protection policies, procedure and legislation
