As a Band 6 Specialist Radiographer within the Radiology and Imaging CSU at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, you will deliver autonomous, high-quality diagnostic imaging across acute hospital sites (BRI, SLH), Community Diagnostic Centres, and out-of-hospital settings. Working within a multidisciplinary team conducting over 270,000 examinations annually, you will provide essential clinical supervision for junior staff, assistants, and radiography students, while participating fully in a 24/7 out-of-hospital rota.

Crucially, this role actively delivers the new Community X-Ray Car Service
, operating mobile diagnostic imaging in domiciliary settings, care homes, and community hubs for frail and vulnerable patients. In this capacity, you will act as a Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS), taking direct responsibility for local radiation safety compliance, local rules, risk assessments, and strict adherence to IR(ME)
R 2017 and IRR
17 regulations across both hospital and non-standard mobile environments.

Main Duties of the Job:
Specialist Radiographer (Band

  • Clinical Delivery & Community Service: Autonomously perform high-quality diagnostic examinations across hospital sites (BRI, SLH), CDCs, and as a core practitioner in the mobile Community X-Ray Car Service
    , delivering imaging to frail and vulnerable patients in care homes and residences.
  • Radiation Safety (RPS): Act as a Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS), ensuring strict compliance with IR(ME)
    R 2017 and IRR
    17 regulations, maintaining local rules, and conducting radiation safety risk assessments--particularly in non-standard community environments.
  • Clinical Governance & Quality Control: Lead and participate in quality assurance (QA) testing, departmental audits, equipment fault reporting, and clinical governance to maintain high technical standards and patient safety.
  • Leadership & Supervision: Supervise, support, and mentor junior radiographers, assistant practitioners, radiographic assistants, and radiography students, ensuring efficient workflow and safe practice across the department.
  • Operational Flexibility: Work flexibly across multi-site locations and participate fully in the 24/7 out-of-hours shift rota, including evenings, weekends, and night shifts (covering portables, emergency, theatres, and fluoroscopy).

Job responsibilities

1. Clinical Delivery & Community X-Ray Car Service

  • Deliver high-quality diagnostic radiography autonomously across hospital sites (BRI, SLH), Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs), and community settings.
  • Lead and operate the Community X-Ray Car Service
    , driving to and conducting mobile imaging examinations in care homes, community hubs, and patient residences for frail and vulnerable patients.
  • Adapt imaging techniques appropriately to accommodate complex patient needs, limited mobility, or non-standard environments.

2. Radiation Safety & RPS Duties

  • Serve as a designated Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) for the department and mobile service, taking direct responsibility for local radiation safety compliance.
  • Enforce and monitor strict compliance with IR(ME)
    R 2017 and IRR
    17 regulations, local rules, and statutory health and safety standards.
  • Establish radiation controlled areas and conduct safety risk assessments when operating mobile X-ray equipment outside fixed hospital environments.

3. Staff Supervision, Mentorship & Training

  • Provide clinical leadership, daily supervision, and mentorship to junior radiographers, assistant practitioners, radiographic assistants, and radiography students.
