This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated nursing leader to influence the future development of Musculoskeletal Services. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring patients receive outstanding care, staff are supported to thrive, and services continue to develop in line with local and national priorities.

Through visible leadership, professional credibility and a passion for quality improvement, the Matron will help shape the future of MSK services and deliver excellence for patients, staff and the wider organisation.

As a senior nurse leader responsible for providing visible, professional, and compassionate leadership across Musculoskeletal (MSK) services, the post holder will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, high‑quality and patient‑centred care whilst promoting excellence in clinical practice, governance, workforce development, operational delivery and service improvement.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide highly visible and credible nursing leadership across MSK services.
  • Promote a culture of compassionate, inclusive and professional leadership.
  • Act as an advocate for patients, carers and staff.
  • Lead by example, demonstrating the highest standards of clinical professionalism and conduct. Ensure compliance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code and Trust values.
  • Support the development of a positive safety culture where concerns are raised, escalated and addressed appropriately.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on nursing practice and professional standards.

The Matron will work in partnership with operational managers, therapists, medical staff and corporate teams to deliver high‑performing services that meet national standards, regulatory requirements and Trust objectives. The post holder will act as a role model for professional practice and provide expert nursing leadership to support the continuous improvement of patient outcomes and staff experience.

Job responsibilities

The Matron for MSK Services provides visible clinical and professional leadership to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, high‑quality, patient‑centred care. The post holder is responsible for leading nursing teams, promoting a culture of excellence, and supporting the achievement of strategic, operational and quality objectives across MSK services. Key responsibilities include patient safety, clinical governance, workforce planning, recruitment and retention, staff development, patient experience, service improvement, risk management and performance monitoring.

Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues, the Matron will drive continuous improvement, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and champion compassionate, inclusive leadership.

Person Specification Experience
  • Substantial management/leadership experience at senior nurse level in relevant clinical speciality
  • Experience of working within Acute Hospital setting
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of Health Policy and its impact on the Professional Nursing Agenda and BTHFT
  • Experience of delivering service improvements with demonstrable positive impact on patient safety, patient experience and quality of care
  • Evidence of a track record of developing nursing practice, or Research Experience and audit application
  • Leading and developing a team
  • Experience of budget management including human resource management
  • Experience of quality assurance
  • Experience of change management
  • Experience of complaints handling
  • Experience of participation in Trust-wide initiatives/ committee membership
  • Experience of policy implementation
