As a member of the military, Training Development Officers provide guidance and advice on the systematic approach to training and education and the Canadian Forces Individual Training and Education System. As experts in military training, education and professional development programmes, they are responsible for ensuring quality and quantity control of training, guiding the development, management and provision of training solutions, teaching in a variety of school settings, and managing learning resources.
They also conduct human performance research and analyse operational job performance requirements, identify organisational needs and facilitate solutions to performance problems.
Work Environment
Training Development Officers generally work in an office setting at a CAF school, unit, base, command or at National Defence Headquarters. They may also be employed in a deployed environment supporting military operations or missions. Regular Force placements roll out after completion of all required training and may involve relocation. Primary Reserve members work part‑time in their local Reserve unit, typically one night per week and some weekends, with optional full‑time service.

The preferred degree is a Master’s in Education combined with three years of full‑time experience as an educational or training consultant. Candidates holding a Bachelor’s in Education may be considered if the CAF determines that the education and experience match the criteria, and may be placed directly into the required on‑the‑job training programme following Basic Military Officer Qualification.
Training
After enrolment, officers attend 12 weeks of basic officer training at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, followed by optional second‑language training (2–9 months). Training Development Officers then receive five months of tailored training on the position’s responsibilities in Borden, Ontario, and complete approximately three months of on‑the‑job training at a Canadian base under supervision.
Part‑time Options
This position is available for part‑time employment with the Primary Reserve across Canada. Reserve members may serve part‑time while pursuing other commitments. They are paid during training, not required to relocate, but may volunteer to move. Reserve Training Development Officers are centrally managed and may take formal CAF IT&E courses, possibly progressing to full‑time roles.
