Position OverviewPlasticair Inc. is seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer with strong experience in industrial ventilation, fan systems, advanced simulation, and composite materials. This role involves full-cycle engineering responsibility from concept design and simulation to testing, manufacturing support, and system integration, supporting complex ventilation and laboratory exhaust projects.
Key Responsibilities- Engineering Design & Development
- Design FRP exhaust fan systems and pollution control equipment based on building mechanical drawings, project specifications, and quotation documentation.
- Design perchloric acid laboratory exhaust systems with FRP construction and integrated washdown systems.
- Develop detailed 3D models, assemblies, and fabrication drawings using Solid Works.
- Produce accurate Bills of Materials (BOM) aligned with design and manufacturing requirements.
- Update designs based on customer feedback, testing results, and engineering changes.
- Testing & Validation
- Perform fan airflow testing on AMCA-certified test chambers to evaluate fan efficiency, airflow volume, and static pressure.
- Ensure compliance with AMCA 210 laboratory methods of testing for fans for certified aerodynamic performance rating.
- Analyze test data and incorporate results into design improvements.
- Simulation & Analysis
- Conduct Solid Works Flow Simulation, including:
- Rotating reference frames
- Tangential faces and rotor modeling
- Parametric studies
- Goal-based optimization
- Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA), including load transfer analysis of composite materials and structures.
- Conduct Solid Works Flow Simulation, including:
- Composite Materials & Manufacturing Support
- Apply extensive knowledge of fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) manufacturing, including:
- Material properties and tolerances
- Lay‑up techniques and mat sequence
- Curing processes and quality considerations
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are practical, efficient, and manufacturable.
- Provide technical support during fabrication, assembly, and quality control processes.
- Apply extensive knowledge of fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) manufacturing, including:
- Software & Automation
- Develop and utilize Python-based tools for engineering calculations, data processing, automation, or design support where applicable.
- Project & Team Collaboration
- Maintain organized project documentation, drawings, and design records.
- Manage multiple engineering tasks while meeting project timelines.
- Collaborate with engineering, sales, and manufacturing teams to resolve technical challenges and deliver projects successfully.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline from a Canadian university.
- Minimum 2 years of hands‑on experience in each of the following areas:
- AMCA fan airflow testing and performance evaluation (AMCA 210 compliance).
- Solid Works Flow Simulation for rotating equipment and parametric optimization.
- FEA load transfer analysis of composite materials.
- Fiberglass (FRP) manufacturing techniques, materials, tolerances, and curing processes.
- Python programming applied to engineering workflows.
- Design of industrial or laboratory FRP exhaust fan systems.
- Design of perchloric laboratory exhaust systems with integrated washdown.
- Experience with industrial ventilation, HVAC, and air handling equipment.
- Strong understanding of machined parts, sheet metal fabrication, and composite structures.
- Experience working in a regulated laboratory or industrial environment.
- Eligibility for P.Eng (PEO) licensing is an asset.
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards (AMCA, ASHRAE, CSA).
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
