As a member of the military, Construction Engineers provide engineering support, such as facilities management, fire engineering, contract and project management, and construction and environmental engineering. As members of the Military Engineer Branch, Construction Engineers plan, develop and implement projects involving a wide range of military engineering tasks.
Primary Responsibilities
Prepare or approve construction drawings, designs and cost estimates
Advise superiors on military engineering matters
Exercise leadership and technical control over organizations involved in engineering services
Provide mapping, charting and geodesic support to sea, land and air operations
Lead and manage a team of skilled personnel
Work Environment
Construction Engineers work as part of a Construction Engineering Flight or Unit. They support operations of the Royal Canadian Air Force and may also support Canadian Army operations and missions. After gaining practical experience, engineers may be posted to a Canadian Armed Forces base or headquarters and deployed on domestic or international missions, including operations in support of UN, NATO or Coalition missions.
Career paths differ for Regular Force (full‑time) and Primary Reserve Force (part‑time). Regular Force engineers are assigned to a base after training with some flexibility for relocations. Reserve engineers work part‑time and may execute occasional deployments.

Applicants with a university degree are assessed for compatibility with the role; successful recruits may be placed directly into on‑the‑job training following basic training. Basic training and military officer qualification training are required before assignment.
Training
Training commences with 12 weeks of basic officer training at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, covering general military knowledge, leadership, regulations, weapons handling and first aid. Follow‑up training includes second language instruction (2–9 months depending on proficiency) and Infantry School coursework at the Combat Training Centre, Gagetown, New Brunswick. Construction Engineers complete specialized training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering, Gagetown, learning engineering reconnaissance, reporting, and facility planning.
Part‑time Options
Part‑time employment with the Primary Reserve is available at various locations. Reserve Force members typically serve part‑time at an Air Force Wing in their community, may combine training with civilian employment, and can volunteer for deployment.
